1 Define your values and goals

Before you can effectively promote social justice and equity, you need to have a clear understanding of what these terms mean to you, and what your personal and professional goals are in relation to them. You may want to reflect on your own identity, experiences, biases, and privileges, and how they shape your perspective and practice. You may also want to consider the needs and expectations of your students, and how you can best serve them in a culturally responsive and respectful way. You may find it helpful to use frameworks or models that can guide your self-assessment and goal-setting, such as the NACADA Core Values of Academic Advising, the CAS Standards for Academic Advising, or the Social Justice Advising Model.

As educators, our job is to educate ourselves, and it is important to distinguish between education and schooling, as many teachers end up schooling rather than truly educating students. Ensure that all perspectives, not just Eurocentric ones, are represented. A good starting point is reading John Agard's poem, "Checking Out Me History," as it succinctly encapsulates the problems within education. While everyone is familiar with the French Revolution, why is the Haitian Revolution not included in school teachings? When slaves successfully overthrow three major powers, and Haiti becomes the first country in the world to abolish slavery, we must question why this significant historical event is omitted from the curriculum.

Para el gran investigador en educación Graham Nuthall, los estudiantes deben encontrar un nuevo concepto en al menos tres ocasiones distintas para aprenderlo correctamente. El comienzo de una clase es un lugar excelente para consolidar el aprendizaje previo y crear un sentido de continuidad, como se?ala Barak Rosenshine. Los docentes debemos entender la importancia de la práctica, y comenzar nuestras clases con una revisión de cinco a ocho minutos del material previamente trabajado. Another way that academic advisors can promote social justice and equity is by empowering their students to achieve their academic, personal, and career goals, and to become active and responsible members of society. You can do this by creating a safe and supportive environment where students can express their identities, values, and aspirations, and by providing them with relevant and accurate information, guidance, and referrals. You can also encourage your students to explore their interests, strengths, and passions, and to pursue opportunities that challenge them and enrich their learning. You may want to use strategies such as appreciative advising, holistic advising, or developmental advising to foster positive and meaningful relationships with your students.

Pensar que trabajar con nuevas metodologías, TICs, o con proyectos, será una solución mágica para los problemas es tan absurdo como pensar que preparándoles solo para las pruebas externas será igualmente efectivo. El desempe?o de los estudiantes está muy influenciado por su contexto familiar, su vecindario, y por supuesto su centro educativo. Sus actitudes y logros se modelan por la cultura que les rodea, porque ajustan sus actitudes y esfuerzos para encajar en esa cultura.

As advisors, we must recognize systemic inequities that disproportionately impact marginalized students. An empowering approach is to help students identify barriers then develop self-advocacy skills to overcome them. Guide students to campus resources that support diverse needs. Keep an open mind to better understand each student's unique situation. Small actions like actively listening without judgement and connecting students to support networks can nurture empowerment. Promote an equitable environment by advocating for policies and resources that lift up students facing the greatest challenges.

4 Evaluate your impact

Finally, academic advisors can promote social justice and equity by evaluating their impact on their students, colleagues, and institutions, and by seeking feedback and improvement. You can use various methods and tools to assess your advising outcomes, such as surveys, portfolios, rubrics, or case studies, and to measure your progress towards your goals. You can also solicit feedback from your students, peers, supervisors, or mentors, and use it to enhance your skills and competencies. You may want to use standards or frameworks such as the NACADA Academic Advising Core Competencies, the NACADA Assessment Institute, or the NACADA Research Center to support your evaluation and development.

Dado que los contextos del aprendizaje y las etapas varían considerablemente (en la naturaleza de los conocimientos, habilidades y comprensión que representan) es fundamental que las evidencias que apoyan la evaluación tengan en cuenta esta saludable variabilidad. No podemos evaluar igual en Infantil que en la etapa preuniversitaria. Porque el peligro es que el lenguaje se uniformice y se generen ideas que valen para todo el mundo, en cualquier parte. En este caso, se convierte en una evaluación que no es auténtica: proviene de la necesidad de rellenar un boletín de notas, o de no causar problemas en una junta de evaluación, por citar algún ejemplo.
