Here's how you can use social media to elevate your public speaking career as a newcomer.

I've been invited to be a guest speaker on many podcasts and LinkedIn lives all because I have a presence on LinkedIn and talk about what I know including resume writing, the military to civilian transition, how to optimize your LinkedIn profile so recruiters can find you, and many other topics that resonate with my audience. I've done in person and online speaking engagements for resume writing and LinkedIn training. If you want to be considered for speaking engagements, you have to put yourself out there by creating content and commenting on other people's posts with thoughtful responses. I started posting on LinkedIn to educate my audience, getting invited to speaking engagements has just been a nice bonus just to do what I love to do :)

I’ve gotten speaking opportunities via Podcast, LinkedIn and my local community as a result of my online presence, due to the insightful public speaking tips I share. My advice for individuals who are new to public speaking and considering speaking engagement is to put yourself out there by sharing a relevant post to your audience via social media like LinkedIn.

Social media has a massive impact on every aspect of the life. Public speaking is not an exception. It helps in creating your identity as a newcomer. It is not necessary to only share the content but the content must be relevant and having real quality. You need to be innovative on social media. Don't copy the content from google or from someone else. Authentic content will give you loyal followers. You can post your videos, host webinars, engage with them. Social media is the great source of networking. Try to connect with people, follow quality content writers. Try to learn new tricks from social media and implement them. Ask your followers to share and provide you feedback. Take that feedback constructively to improvise your performance.

Leverage social media by sharing short video clips of your speeches, engaging with your audience through Q&A sessions, and consistently posting valuable insights related to your speaking topics. Build a strong online presence by connecting with industry professionals and showcasing your expertise through regular content updates.

Share authentic content that means something to you and the audience. Without it your audience is hard to resonate with the public. Always share the context which allows one to relate or not relate to the content.

With social media, we have the best opportunity to grow as a keynote public speaker. If you are able to share content that is compelling and engaging, you can help make the event organizer feel confident about you coming to speak on their stage. (1) Record a high quality HD video, look professional, great lighting, eye-popping background. (2) Share high quality message, ideas, and thoughts. If you are able to teach me something new in 60 seconds or less on a video, I wonder how much I can learn from a full length keynote! (3) Delivery. Fluctuate your tonality, tempo, volume, and look directly into the camera. Put on a show and watch how many gigs you can land through a simple video!

Share tips, techniques, and resources related to public speaking that can benefit your audience. Use various formats: blogs, infographics, videos, and podcasts to cater to different preferences. Collaborate with other speakers or thought leaders to create joint content that showcases your expertise. Research and use relevant hashtags in public speaking and motivation niches to expand your reach. Participate in trending hashtags related to your topic to gain visibility. Create a unique hashtag that followers can use to connect with you and your brand. Example: Create a hashtag like #SustainableSpeakerJourney to track your content about environmental speaking engagements.

Post Engaging Updates: Share insights, tips, and success stories about your public speaking experiences to engage and inform your audience. Create Valuable Resources: Develop and share resources like infographics, blog posts, or videos that provide value to others interested in public speaking. Leverage Hashtags: Use relevant hashtags to increase the visibility of your content and connect with a broader audience interested in public speaking.

Sharing content on social media not only establishes yourself as a thought leader in your space, but helps you learn. Ever since I started posting AI content 5-6 days a week, I feel more up-to-date and knowledgable than ever before.

Follow and engage with established speakers, coaches, and organizations. Attend virtual webinars and events to meet industry leaders and expand your connections. Send personalized connection requests with an apparent reason for wanting to connect. Example: After attending a webinar by a well-known public speaker, send a LinkedIn message expressing your appreciation for their insights and mentioning a shared interest. You can approach other speakers for joint ventures like workshops, podcasts, or social media takeovers. Leverage platforms like Clubhouse or Twitter Spaces for discussions or panel talks. Create a series where you interview seasoned speakers on social media profiles to offer value while networking.

Connect with industry leaders, join relevant groups, and share your insights. Engage in conversations, offer help, and build genuine relationships. Remember, networking online is just like networking in person – it's about building connections and creating opportunities.

Connect with Influencers: Reach out to established public speakers and industry leaders for potential collaborations and mentorship opportunities. Participate in Discussions: Engage in conversations on social media platforms to showcase your expertise and connect with like-minded individuals. Attend Virtual Events: Join webinars, online conferences, and virtual meetups to expand your network and gain new insights.

Host Webinars: Organize and lead webinars or live sessions on topics related to public speaking to demonstrate your skills and interact with your audience. Run Q&A Sessions: Engage with your followers by hosting live Q&A sessions where you answer their questions about public speaking and communication. Share Live Experiences: Stream live from speaking events, conferences, or workshops to provide real-time updates and insights.

Your personal brand is your secret weapon as a public speaker—but it only works if it's authentically you. Don’t just be another voice in the crowd; find your niche and own it. Social media can amplify your brand, but only if you're real. Skip the cookie-cutter posts and spark genuine conversations that take a side and demonstrate who you are. Consistency across platforms is crucial but never lose your authenticity. Be true, be engaging, and the opportunities will follow. Interestingly enough, the speakers with the strongest personal brand never set out with this as the goal. Most of them just pursued topics and angles of interest, and their following found them.

Everyone has a personal brand. If you haven't already started intentionally building one already, here are things to start with: (1) Audience: Who are you called to serve? What problems are you called to solve for them? How are you called to solved that problem for them? (2) Vision: What is your mission statement? Your core values? Your beliefs? What do you strongly stand for and what do you strong stand against? (3) Execution. Develop assets that will support your brand and bring it to life. Social media content, your website, and thought leadership pieces (article features, podcast interviews, TEDx talks, keynotes, TV interviews, etc.) Great brands attract their ideal clients to them organically and when done correctly you can too.

Define Your Unique Value: Clearly articulate what sets you apart as a public speaker and emphasize your unique strengths and expertise. Create a Consistent Message: Ensure that your messaging and visual branding are consistent across all your social media platforms. Showcase Your Achievements: Highlight your accomplishments, such as speaking engagements, awards, or positive testimonials, to build credibility.

Monitor Engagement Metrics: Track likes, shares, comments, and other engagement metrics to understand what content resonates with your audience. Gather Feedback: Use surveys or direct feedback from your audience to assess the impact of your content and speaking engagements. Adjust Your Strategy: Based on your analysis, refine your content strategy and approach to better align with your audience's preferences and goals.

Tracking engagement on your content is a great way to understand which type of content works the best for you. Over the past 3 months, I have been posting about anything and everything AI. I analyzed and tracked engagement to see which types of videos performed the best. After a couple months of tracking, I have a pretty good understanding of the content that works the best for me and provides the most value to my audience.
