As we know that the field of chemical process engineering has many bases and assumptions, when working around different unit operations and processes and dealing with their process design there are chances that one or many assumptions or basis taken during the initial design phase may not actually work the way you anticipated during the process or plant startup, so it is always helpful to be in hindsight that not everything will work as per your design and embracing those flaws will ensure that when problems arise you have a contingency plan ready to make it a success.

As a process technology engineer with over 5 years of experience in the field, one thing I know is that during the basic engineering stage and process development stage it is very important to set smaller goals that reflect the bigger picture, sometimes smaller tasks may feel irrelevant but these small targets when completed will make your overall design very robust, so please make small milestones and complete them on time and always ensure you know the criticality and importance of all the milestones established

One thing I’ve found helpful is that discuss with peers and seniors and always try to learn from their experiences, what I do is that when I work on any chemical process or when I’m involved with process engineering of any molecule, during the lab development and piloting of the process I note down the key challenges faced so that when designing or scaling up I take care that those challenges have been solved by engineering aspects or critical design aspects so that during normal plant operations these challenges don’t create issues to the operation personnel
