I assess individual needs of students through observation and a clean slate. I avoid reading past reports because I prefer to start with an open mind and heart. I once had a student that the principal warned me was trouble maker and had been suspended 3 times. He was only in grade 5! His grades were poor and he was a bully. In October, I arranged a home visit to discuss his behaviour and learning. What I discovered was an abundance of critical remarks about him from the parents. At school, I gave him lots of responsibilities to help me in the classroom. He loved it. I praised him constantly. By June, he was a model student with B+ grades. On the last day of school, while waiting for the bus, he ran to me and hugged me!

First thing you need to figure out in each class is class dynamics and then individual dynamics. What makes the class move and what makes individual student move. Then you go on knowledge level, learning style and specifics of each student. There are tools available for adressing this, but your observations as a teacher are crutial.

As a Chinese language teacher, i always prepare my lesson plans with clear and measurable goals for my students. But it sometimes doesn't align in the sense that my students some times spend more time in attaining some goals. For example one time we discussed Chinese Tones. They were quick to differentiate them, i was happy but when the tones were placed in words, it became a problem, we took extra time to identify the tones in words than when they stood alone. It was challenging and interesting at the same time, but in the end we tackled the problem. What I do is to ask questions to the students, a lot of questions. They can see flaws on their methods, problems with their logics or the efectiveness of their results.

We are all learning from the day we are born. Trying to restrict the concept of meaningful learning to the parameters of an educational environment (school/college) during the general timeframe of ages 3-21, maybe 6-16, is ridiculous. As an Autistic adult I undertook my first post-graduate degree aged 43, and achieved my most recent MA (in Autism Studies of course) aged 61! Enabling the neurodivergent person to access education when they are ready, and respecting those of us who want to set our own pace is key.

As all the fingers in our hand is not same likewise all the students are not same. We have to respect the individual differences among different students and plan strategies that will cater to the individual needs of the students using innovation and latest technologies
