Emotional Intelligence as an example of soft skills in today's life is getting more and more importance everyday. Based on my experience, I noticed that R&D success depends to a large extent on this skill in order to align your research proposals with the stakeholders benefits and expectations and to succeed in presenting your ideas/results in a way that attracts their attention, win their hearts, and motivate them to keep the funding flowing. There are no enough words to explain the importance of EI for research teams to succeed in today's competitive world that focuses more and more on the sustainable goals and humanity benefits from the R&D process as a whole.

Appreciating the stakeholders to share their views, listening to them, and discussing on those ideas and feedback nurtures bond and connectivity. Focused listening to member views, actions and reviews based on discussions, brings in accountability and ownership among the members. This increases the chances of more involvement, constructive feedbacks and suggestions rather than criticism alone. Communication of recorded discussion minutes/notes on what was listened to and subsequent coarse of actions planned will fetch better results.

There is a number of dimensions to the trait of emotional intelligence. I will focus on the dimension of "active listening". Within the dimension of "active listening" I will focus on "listen to the person who is talking to you instead of thinking about what the next thing that you are going to say to them". This is a difficult thing to do and it might make the speaker a bit uncomfortable because they are probably not used to someone actually listening to them. And this style and pace of conversation is different...it takes some time to learn and to get used to.
