Here's how you can transition into the teaching profession as a career changer.

As a person who transitioned from law to high school teaching, I learned that you have to have a pull toward the profession and new just a strong desire to leave your previous career. In addition, you have to have a strong desire to work with adolescents as opposed to merely having a love for the content. Don't get me wrong expertise in the subject matter is essential to being a master teacher because it allows you to meet students where they are, but a sense of the student is equally important.

I have been a teacher and teacher trainer for more than 15 years and in that time we have heard of student-centred learning, guided discovery, peer teaching etc. While I continue to see value in these approaches, I urge prospective teachers not to forget that they must be experts in what they teach. It's not all about 'handing it over to the learners'. Students have expectations of what a lesson involves and part of that is that you, the teacher, will bring deep knowledge and understanding to what you are teaching. Moral of the story; give students an opportunity to engage with the material and practice: of course! At the same time make sure to provide students not with more questions but with clear and thoughtful answers!

Teachers need to take a student-centered approach to the work. That is often overlooked, even by long term teachers and professors. Many people think about teaching and not as much about learning. Teaching and learning are two different verbs, conducted by two different sets of actors. When I started my career as a professor, I thought that if I taught something the students learned it. But, over time, I have come to appreciate that teaching does not equate with learning. After I teach them something, I expect my students to put their learning to work - that is when they learn. So, to understand teaching, you need to understand learning. Learning happens when students apply the knowledge and skills and get feedback.

An example I’ve seen is a former engineer who transitioned into teaching through a residency program. They brought problem-solving skills and analytical thinking to the classroom, enriching students' learning experiences. In this program, the engineer taught under the guidance of a mentor while completing their teaching certification. This approach allowed them to apply real-world knowledge immediately, making subjects like math and science more engaging. The mentorship provided support in classroom management and curriculum development. This blend of practical experience and academic training enabled a smoother transition and highlighted the contributions career changers can make in education.

Besides having a strong foundation of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the chosen field of academics, having on-field work experience gives a huge boost to your teaching prospects. The fact that you have a proven record of academic excellence as well as practical execution of learned knowledge is a testament to your commitment to the subject. This combination also helps you understand how to bridge the gap between academics and the industry that students aspire to enter. Your academic as well as practical experience not only makes your profile strong but also makes your students value you as their mentor.

That is true indeed. For me I had a Bachelor’s degree. I had to get a Post graduate teaching diploma to allow me into the teaching field. The idea is that, you may have the content knowledge but lack the skills and techniques to bring these knowledge to students in the classroom. The delivering part is crucial. You first of all need to get to know your students, then use different methods to deliver content knowledge. Some students are slow learners, some are very bright and quick . Others have problems at home ,while others simply are forced to come to school. Therefore, you need the teaching certificate to learn all these different ways of delivering your content knowledge.

One thing I’ve found helpful is volunteering in a classroom or tutoring students. This hands-on experience can provide a clearer picture of what teaching involves and help you develop practical skills. Before stepping into a classroom, you’ll need the right credentials. Most teaching positions require a bachelor’s degree and a teaching certificate. If your degree isn’t in education, consider alternative certification programs designed for career changers. These programs often provide a pathway to certification while you gain hands-on experience through internships or provisional teaching. Investigate the requirements in your state or region, as they can vary widely.

Teaching is a craft that one certainly refines over time. As you transition into teaching, think about the times that you learned best. What was it about the teacher that reached you? Putting yourself into the position of student will get you to see things from the student perspective. That may help you to reconsider teaching as it has historically been seen, through a mindset that you need to become a "sage on the stage" telling students all you know and may help you to realize that learning happens through action, and though mistakes. Here is to hoping that through experience you gain insights into student-centered learning that actively engages students in their own learning journey. Nothing can be more rewarding!

Change is constant! We are in a world that is constantly evolving and you can't afford to operate with the dynamics of the early 90's even though some are still relevant. However, learning is a journey that doesn't have an end so, ensure to take courses, develop your professional skills by attending conferences, workshops and do well to read books. The best way to stay relevant as a teacher is by being versatile and embracing the new.

Reflection is an integral part of growing as an educator. Reflect on days and moments. Consider how you could do better yourself as a professional or reach your students in more practical ways. Part of reflection is also having a mentor as a soundboard and a refiner. Lean into someone who will be honest and straightforward so you become continually become a better version of yourself.

As a Professor, I ask for feedback from students, constantly. When I first developed an online curriculum to train immigrant advocates, I asked for feedback from students when they finished every unit (weekly). That way, I gathered the feedback close in time to their work on the material and could adjust and iterate accordingly. If you wait until the end of the semester, as is typical in higher education, you will lose out on nuance and detail. Also, if you get feedback close in time, there is an opportunity to iterate and make adjustments for those students. if you gather feedback only at the end of the semester, nothing back be done to improve the experience for the students giving you the feedback.

Find a partner in your teaching to reflect on what worked and failed. When filing away lessons/projects, take note of which type of learner excels and flounders in the task. Note what foundational information was required/missing. Then meet over winter and summer break to review the best and worst of your plans— learn from each to redirect better course lessons for the upcoming years. When you each bring the material to discuss, you can create better plans for each of you. A veteran teach is helpful here— but you are the “rookie” have lots to offer too.

I’ve found that keeping a digital log of my notes and insights after each class has been invaluable. It’s a practice I highly recommend. Teaching is a dynamic experience, full of learning opportunities not just for students, but for us as educators too. Embrace the learning curve and be open to evolving your approach. Pay close attention to what resonates with your students and be willing to adjust your strategies accordingly. Remember, effective teaching is as much about listening and adapting as it is about instructing. In my opinion if someone wants to change career and explore career opportunities in teaching then one should have expertise to be mentor first. Teaching profession is very noble and it ultimately should lead to students development. Hence a teacher should have the ability to create good content based on his/her past experience and should be able to make connect with the mentee.
