My segue into philanthropy and one that I'd encourage others to take if a career in fundraising is of interest, came by way of sales. Before entering the nonprofit sector, I worked numerous sales positions in a few different industries and over time found my way to working in sales within the performing arts. The performing arts sector is interesting because orgs generate both philanthropic revenue (donations) and ticketing revenue (product sales). I came in on the product side which fell in line with my prior experience (assess fit/transferable skills) while slowly beginning to understand the philanthropic side of the business. From there I moved on to traditional fundraising roles at other nonprofit organizations.

Fist, philanthropy isn't easy, and it's not free money. Let's get that out of the way early. If you're not invested in the mission first, you will struggle to find success. If you love the work your potential organization is doing, dive in. You're going to be met with hoards of people singing the praises of your work but are unwilling to invest in it beyond that good-speak. This is the standard. Become comfortable with that reality (especially if you're in an administrative or development role). Don't allow that to deter you. Push mission, continue to educate yourself on why what your organization does is important, find statistics to show impact, and be a constant presence. The community will come along with you in time.

When working as a funder, the most valuable skill you can develop is saying “no” with respect and empathy. One of the hardest parts of the work is allocating the budget (because there is always a budget) against the need. That means you can’t always say “yes”; in fact, you will likely have to turn down requests far more often than you are able to fulfill them. Ensure that you clearly articulate the decision, so you are not falsely giving hope, and provide relevant insights and suggestions, if appropriate, to the requestor to help them advance their ability to raise funds from your organization or others in the future.

With the ongoing professionalisation of the sector, so much knowledge is available nowadays, from short articles and videos to books, courses, and entire university degrees. I did a Master's degree in management (non-profit organisations), which had a complete course on philanthropy. I later created and led a Master's in Social Entrepreneurship, the first in Asia-Pacific. Knowledge is widely available, and if you are transitioning to philanthropy, you will be wise to gain and use it.

People ask me all of the time how to transition into philanthropy. First start with self- why are you interested in philanthropy? Philanthropy means the love of humanity. How does this show up in your work, life, and career goals today? Second, reflect on mission- philanthropy like any other field is diverse in its approach. Third and most importantly be clear that your values align with the philanthropic organizations' values. Test this match by conducting your due diligence via their annual reports and their community reputation.
