There is no failure, only opportunities to learn and grow. You only fail when you stop working towards the goal and even then pivoting on a goal that is leading you to one that you discover while working towards the first still isn't failure. Your perspective determined how you perceive the world. If you perceive losses you will have losses, if you perceive lessons you will have lessons. When I started my career in sales I was taught the goal was to see how many Nos you can get. However, the most number of Nos would usually correspond with the most number of yes's as well. Your response from your lessons determine your choice to either fail or succeed.

Setback in career often open door for new challenges and opportunities. Breaks shields of comfort zone, creates force of power for to fight back and start over! It’s very hard to leave comfort zone and pursue other endeavors specially when its unpredictable, but if you get in to predicament of ‘no option’ all energy is collected and used towards ‘creating new’ path! Path of unlimited prospects, opportunities and growth!

I often send out a follow up email asking for positive and/or negative feedback. Was there anything that wasn’t clear? Did I leave something out? What was your favorite story? Do you plan on making any changes related to my presentation? There is great value in feedback. You can learn what your audience values as well as what you need to change. I want to know what impact I’m having. When you learn what makes you different and special you can focus on those things in your presentations and in your sales pitches.

I have done a lot of free talks so that I could get more practice. Analyzing my mistakes led me to hiring a coach. The coach was very helpful and taught me not to try and memorize my delivery but talk from my heart. I love feedback and while you may get some from the person who hires you, it is best when you find your own path to become better at it. Speaking like anything is an art. It takes time to perfect it and I am now going to inquire about acting lessons so that I understand how to use the stage to maximize my impact.

Whilst setbacks are part of life’s rich tapestry it is helpful to look at ways to build our resilience and adjust our approach so we can move forward in a positive way by bearing in mind the following: Setbacks don't define us - When we don't succeed in some way it doesn't mean we are worthless. Setbacks can help us grow - These are merely stepping stones that help us to learn and ultimately be a better version of the person we are today. Setbacks make us more resilient - The more we experience setbacks, the better we will be at handling it in the future.

Adjusting strategy is key; shows ability to pivot, presence and the determination to stay in the game not to mention resilience. All of this become stories of grit and above all self belief. Yet we are human and setback is demoralizing; it can cause real self-doubt. So while adjusting, I have found it is essential to do so, not from a place of 'lack' but from a place of 'inquiry' & curiosity. 'How to do this better' is better self-talk than ',what it's going to take or what am I lacking'? So pay attention to the voice in your head, be very self-compassionate;allow yourself to mourn the setback and practise /learn to fuel mastery & remember to appreciate your effort & the talent. Then adjust, pivot and try again with better understanding.

Understand your endgame or at least start tracking data as you go ? Often folks are focused on getting on the next stage and getting in front of more people. Take time to figure out who your ideal audiences and how you were going to convert speaking opportunities into a sustainable income.

I was raised on these words, "practice makes perfect." Stand in front of your mirror. Have your go to notes but use them only to remind yourself what your points are within your delivery. There are many people who have speaking agencies, who also coach newbies. Let me know if you need someone and I am happy to share who I know. Don't look for perfection until you really have your content down. Practice daily or every other day and present it to your mother, father, husband or wife, and anyone that is around you who will lend an ear. Let them tell you how it impacted them. The more feedback you receive, the better you will become. Let your fear go, and your anxiety. You can do this. Don't give up.

People like to hear stories, so make your story one of the best. If you don't think you're so great, then you should probably reconsider public speaking as a career path. You've got to toot your own horn because if you don't no one else will either. It just makes sense and it all start with believing in yourself and knowing that what you have been through is a tale worth telling.

The most significant set back in my speaking career has been Cholangiocarcinoma (aka bile duct cancer). After flatlining on an operating table, chemo, radiation, and a life saving liver transplant, I've had the privilege of getting back on stages to speak. Cancer provided many gifts. Here are a few that have helped my speaking career: 1. Greater empathy for the audiences and people I serve 2. Improved clarity to keep the most important things as most important 3. Increased understanding that I can't control everything and that's OK 4. During the "down time", I wrote a book. It launched as a bestseller in 7 categories relavant to my speaking You are stronger than you realize. In every challenge, there is opportunity. Never give up hope.

One thing I found .... Failure isn't a loss when you take the time to learn from it.
