Firstly thinking of setback as career failure is not going to help. So let’s park this term aside. And take it simply as something not align to your expectation in your career this moment. By reframing the situation, you will be in a better state of mind to do the assessment more comprehensively. Instead of putting all your energy into understanding what’s wrong, it will help you uncover opportunities more easily and place your focus in the future where you can change.

Replace the word Failure with Learning, then study review and take away the key learnings, good and bad be aware of these and make a point of appreciating which parts are essential in replicating towards your future growth.

Embrace reality might be better expressed as 'embrace change'. As skillful beings, we are always evolving and what feels like failure tends to be the richest opportunities we have for meaningful growth. It takes courage and keen awareness not to get stuck in a place of shame and harsh self-criticism when a career setback occurs. Instead of getting caught in feelings of judgement and inadequacy, ask yourself "what do I really want?" As much as possible, choose next steps that feel like they will lead you to a place/position that is more aligned with your values, desires, and goals. Trust your gut and your heart!

If you're going to ask for honest feedback from trusted colleagues, consider calling it an informational interview or focus group. People will automatically put on different hats and be ready to give insight. Otherwise, they may feel uncomfortable and dance around the answers you need to grow.

Feedback is the breakfast of champions. It’s about being open to criticism and using it as a tool for improvement. It’s about understanding that everyone has room for growth and that feedback is a way to identify where that growth can happen. It’s not always easy to hear, but it’s necessary for personal and professional development.

Seek out feedback from others involved this could include team mates, project sponsors, your manaager or others. Ask about what went well as well as what could have been done differently? How you seek out the feedback depends on your relationship - via a call/face to face meeting or via a feedback form on your employee system? Remember if you are getting feedback in a meeting start by framing the conversation in terms of learning from this project/initiative . Probe to build up your understanding so that you get a full picture i.e. was it lack of communication if so about "purpose/result/progress" or was it frequency, what would great look like ? Was it collaboration/ways of working- what made that less effective? Anything else?

Once the root cause is established next bIG step is corrective measures. List them , options available with pros and cons. It could be update on some skills, new learnings or innovating new marketing strategy. After all at every stage one has to sell his ideas, products, processes or services. Itf the environmental changes have taken place like new products with updated technology , one has to find way s to mitigate like new designs, up date technology or shift to white adjacent space at all stages channels of communication should be open from stakeholders, customers and with active discussion mode with mentors and peers

What is a career failure? There’s no such thing. Only lessons. - Lesson to align your career choice with your passion. - Lesson to play at your strengths - Lesson to fail forward. - Lesson to surround yourself with successful people in your chosen path (mentor, coach, etc.)

Learning from your feedback is always useful. Remember, take the feedback in a positive way because it is always an opportunity to learn new things. Register for webinars, conferences, subscribe to industry updates, make notes and review them. See the change in you in just 3 months time, you will be surprised to see the good side of yourself.

Goals give us direction. They provide a roadmap for where we want to go and how we’re going to get there. It’s about setting realistic and achievable goals that align with your career aspirations. It’s about understanding that success is a journey, not a destination, and that every step towards your goal is a step towards success. Setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals can provide a clear direction and motivate you to move forward.

Resilience is the key to overcoming setbacks. It’s about developing a positive mindset and the mental toughness to face challenges head-on. It’s about understanding that setbacks are temporary and that with perseverance and determination, you can overcome any obstacle.

Everyone will experience set backs from time to time in their career, this doesn’t make it a failure. From every experience there is an opportunity to learn something, and opportunity to see some benefits and to be grateful for the experience (no matter how difficult it may have been). Reflecting on these points will increase your resilience in the future.

Remember practice makes perfect. We learn each time we do something .When considering how to keep going - consider your long term goal- how mastering this area will help you because......think about training you might do or consider working with your manager or a peer coach to improve your skills in this area. Keep your actions small, what one step can you take to improve in this area? How committed are you to taking this step on a score of 1-10? By when? What other steps could you take? By when? Resilience is about picking yourself up, learning from what happened and moving on v dwelling. Establishing some clear progress will help you. Finally when you do one of your changes/actions, use feedback to acknowledge & celebrate your win

One thing that's helped me build resilience is reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth. When faced with a career challenge, I ask myself, "What can I learn from this experience to become a better version of myself?" By shifting my perspective, I find the strength to keep moving forward.

Break your comfort zone. Connect with professionals in your industry and share your story, you will be amazed on how many people have gone through the same things and offer to help. Start building on your relationships, be kind and always thank them for their valuable support.

In modern era with complex products, processes or services typically intersect may domains, hence the collaborative approach is most desirable. the customer is also attracted to single window end to end solution from collaboration. It enhances and screeches markets even to remote geographical locations. Networking means aligning with such organizations with own niche but to shadow the weakness. For success of Network one has to establish understanding, procedures & agreements with mutual respect. the relationships should be nurtured to establish mutual trust too. while participating in collaborative programs one gets enough opportunities to understand the criticality of other domains, which is enriched learning & adds value to self.

Mindset is key here. Life isn't a straight line from nothing to success. There are always the rough in-betweens which most people don’t talk about. The same goes for any successful career path—often full of ups and downs, mistakes, and detours. So, my disposition and advice would be : Don't deny the reality of failing—but don’t let it define you either. The mindset shift is to see those detours as feedback, a gift; a data point—a lesson—a way to make lemonade out of lemons. If the perspective is right, you really never fail. You only learn. Learning how to learn remains a superpower in today's professional clime.

One thing I’ve found helpful is looking back at all the times that I have had setbacks in my career. Though I do not know how things would have turned out had I ‘got that job’, ‘closed that deal’, ‘appeared more confident in that meeting’- I do know how the new path that I ended up to be on, was right for me. I either found a better job, learned and closed another deal, or taught myself how to do better in the next meeting. Every setback teaches us something so we can be even greater and do better in future opportunities.

Be mindful of the language that you use and how this can impact your future aspirations. For example this article states ‘career failure’, there really is no such thing as career failure, it’s just hurdles that you have had the strength to overcome. When we reflect using negative language, it can make this past seem worse than it was and we take parts of that negativity into the future. Language plays a huge role in cultivating a growth mindset.

Failures are not setbacks they are feedback and learning. We can always learn from the experience and work for betterment. The choice is yours whether you want to sit back and worry about what went wrong or learn the lesson and take required actions to become successful.
