Here's how you can thrive as a self-employed writing consultant.

Thriving as a self-employed writing consultant requires a solid understanding of your niche. This involves identifying your specific expertise, target audience, and unique value proposition. By knowing your niche, you can tailor your services and marketing efforts to attract clients who align with your skills and offerings, leading to greater success and satisfaction in your consulting career.

Finding your niche as a full-time writer can take time. I started out marketing myself as more of a generalist, but over time, more grant clients found me and I now consider grant writing my primary niche. Take some time to apply for a variety of jobs and see what you love and where your most positive feedback comes from. Then you can start to market yourself in your niche with credibility. I also think it's important not to define your niche too narrowly; don't remove emphasis on your other skills in case you have a slow run in your niche and need to keep earning income.

As a writer, deciding on a niché market is important. First, write what you are passionate about! Second, write what you know in an authentic manner. Third, choose a few topics and try them on for size. You may enjoy two vastly different areas of expertise. I know I have enjoyed three different niché’s for some time. Try to remain focused when writing on a certain topic. Market each area, in its appropriate forum or network. Finally, just keep writing!

If you're still in the early stages, it's important to land two or three key clients first rather than casting your net to reach as many prospects as possible. Two or three main clients will add to the effectiveness of your promotion through your services which they find satisfactory.

One thing I suggest we can try is to share insights and experiences by teaching free classes, or volunteering at schools that lack writing teachers. It can also improve your reputation as a dedicated writer.

I started my current business in October 2022, and it took over six months to firmly establish a portfolio that demonstrates my abilities and credibility. I would encourage newer writers to be patient, as attracting a pipeline of clients takes a frustrating amount of time. Use what you do have, write anything you can (including LinkedIn articles) and you will establish your credibility in time.

I believe it is important to categorise one's clients into different categories. As a writing consultant, you work for both light content as well as core technical ones. The contract must consider these variations and probably, the pricing also depends on the level of commitment required.
