When you are preparing for a presentation, it is important that you know your audience and tailor your presentation accordingly. Knowing your audience is not about making random guesses but about making an effort to find out information about them.

Try sharing stock market trading tips to a 9 yr old. Or sing a POEM "Twinkle Twinkle" in front of a corporate crowd. You wouldn't do it. Because you know that it is not relevant. While this is simple. Sometimes knowing about the audience may not be that easy. At that time, researching about their background is very critical. Say you are invited to speak at a doctor's conference vis a vis an engineering conference, your examples have to be tuned to their common likes and dislikes. e.g. Doing things at the 11th hour is a common joke in engineering. Medical professionals would not associate with that easily.

1) Ask your client at the onset what are their functional business objectives for the next 6-12 months 2) ask HR for the specific names of different departments and use that EXACT verbiage to connect! ?? 3) ask for details on the other material being covered for a conference so that you can tie in components!

The key is knowing what the outcome your audience wants. If you target you speaking to address the outcome, it will land with any audience.

I don't think anyone reading the article here would disagree that engagement is critical. But how do you do it? Is a better thought to ponder. A lot of speakers associate engagement with Just asking Questions or making the participants do an activity. However, Engagement can come from advanced tricks like 1) Having a signature line/phrase in your speech. You use that phrase twice and then the third time onwards you only say half of it and let the audience say it for you. 2) Taking names of people from the audience (if you know) and sharing relevant stuff (Need to careful of saying right things) 3) The use of the word "Imagine" engages people in their thoughts Hope you find these useful.
