Literature review of solutions previously suggested to tackle a problem helps in two ways. One, it is inspiring to know each suggestion's perspective and why it succeeded/failed, and Two, how your idea could differ/be better than what already exists. Literature review also gives you the opportunity to network/collaborate with researchers who are working on the common goal, which has been a pivotal learning experience in my own experiments.
