1) Establish Common Resolve: Start by expressing your input is intended to achieve positive outcomes for the team or organization. 2) Maintain Trust in the relationship: It's fine, and even optimal, to disagree routinely. Healthy disagreement is where the idea marketplace works itself out. But without trust, disagreement can create sub-optimal decisions due to guarded inputs. 3) Be Objective: Show data supporting recommendation. Good information can build interest and enthusiasm more than misguided emotion. 4) Plan for Risk Mitigation: Consider risks related to the idea ahead of the pitch, and come prepared with the mitigating recommendations for those risks. 5) Don't take it personally: It was about the team to begin with.

My experience has been that most bosses and that too when you are older than them are afraid of implementing any change for the better when there is a fear that you will overshadow them. The limelight should be on them. In 95% cases this is the fear they have. In some cases the bosses have brazenly taken the idea and transformed it into their own idea without any credit to you. So when the idea is good for the organisation, we need to brace for these kind of bosses. Implement the change for the organisation and sometimes forget the credit. Someday in the future it will be recognised. But go ahead and bring in the good changes. You will sleep better. The boss will have a troubled sleep.
