Here's how you can sustain and foster your professional relationships as an educational leader over time.

Be a giver. Don't be a taker. Build a reputation on being generous and overdelivering. It's a path to success. That's why Einstein said: “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value. He is considered successful in our day who gets more out of life than he puts in. But a man of value will give more than he receives.”

Be consistent and reliable... give your colleagues the gift of your full presence and attention... follow through on your word... express care for their lives and well-being outside of the "work"... ask great questions... support their growth...seek out their feedback on you can better support them... show up with vulnerability and authenticity so that both of you can bring forth your full humanity... inspire them through a healthy balance of challenge and support!

Be authentic. Trust involves being vulnerable about your struggles and concerns. The great thing is that almost everyone I know in education is empathetic and passionate! The depth of the connections you build will also rely on your ability to receive help from others. Building trust takes time and involves mutually helping one another and for me, this looks like consistently seeking opportunities to connect to other leaders. To both give and receive advice and support from each other.

Figure out some kind of system where you can track relationships that matter to you. Learn to become a great listener. Take notes. And set times when you will reconnect with your VIP relationships. It's not hard. You just need a system and implement it.

Developing professional bonds does not require a significant, time-consuming transition; rather, it requires consistent small actions with mutual trust and respect on one another.

Encouraging colleagues' professional growth is crucial. Often, they may not actively seek development once they feel secure and settled. Leaders must set an example by participating in faculty development programs and updating themselves through personal development and skill enhancement courses. Financial support for the intersted members facilitating enrollment for courses and paid leave for conferences can facilitate growth. Recognizing achievements boosts morale and inspires others. Entrusting higher responsibilities fosters confidence and value. Finally taking genuine interest in their progress builds trust and strengthens institutional bonds.

It's also crucial for educational leaders to prioritize reciprocity in their professional relationships. Actively seek opportunities to give back to your colleagues and community, whether through mentorship, collaboration on projects, or sharing resources and expertise. By fostering a culture of reciprocity, you not only strengthen your existing relationships but also attract new connections who value the mutual exchange of support and knowledge.
