I was once advised by my senior " an ideal working relationship is when a junior does not forget he is a junior and the senior never remembers he is a senior" this works wonderfully

Focus on those fields which actually know...while there IS generic knowledge in the field, there is also a need for specialized knowledge and expertise. For this reason, Fire Services should contribute substantially to fire and rescue related planning, Police to public security, traffic flow and loss control. and both Paramedics and local hospitals to the care of both victims and others with higher than normal needs for clinical care. All of these organizations, and other agencies, should have a place at the table which reflects their own specialized knowledge and experience.

Remember, building a strong professional network takes time and effort. It's essential to approach this process with authenticity and a genuine interest in supporting and connecting with others in your organization.

In my opinion, it's all about exposure and engagement. Helping managing a crisis "from the inside" allows observation, teaches more, is more challenging and gives satisfaction once crisis is over. And is inspiring for the team one leads.

Engage with your team and meet them on their level. The “open door policy” doesn’t always work. Go out into the field and have true human conversations with them. Once I implemented this in my leadership life, I was truly amazed at all of the things I learned. Not only about their professional lives, but personally as well. Know your followers! A good rule of thumb is to take notes during events when you hear something you think would be useful; that way, you can take it back to your organization or team.

Knowledge sharing is very vital in emergency management. Some experiences shared may have one or two things that might be new or unheard-of, or not documented, which will come of handy for others in emergency management. The Knowledge not only benefit the staff but clients as well. As they get to enjoy the experiences of the staff based on the knowledge shared.

As an Emergency Management leader, it’s your responsibility to make sure to eliminate as many situations as possible where only one person - especially you - have information that could be vital. An easy way to put this into practice is to constantly strive to develop your replacements. Democratize information as much as possible!

Share your experience and knowledge with your team. Good and bad. There’s always something to learn and I preach “falling forward.” Your goal as a leader should be to make those below you better to eventually replace you someday. Don’t let the idea of someone replacing you hold you back. We don’t live forever and, if you have any pride in the organization you work for, YOUR goal should be to recognize those to carry on the torch and make your organization better than you found it.

Probably one of the hardest and longest to do out of the skills given. Trust has to be earned not forced. The biggest battle to overcome is the distrust former supervisors, managers, or people in high authority has put in employees. Having good intentions, being consistent and being genuine will help overcome these barriers. Once trust is established your team can be unstoppable with the right direction.

Trust is a core value to the True Leader. Trust can be obtained through hard work, honest self-assessment, and diligent application of skills to the organization. Emergency management leaders must incorporate trust with every aspect of the strategic makeup. Place trust in the team members that they will strive to complete assignments in a professional manner. That same trust will be reciprocated when operational plans are developed, personnel are deployed, and actions are needed to engage critical incidents. Trust will be lost if either side declares the other's intentions are questionable.

Trust in your staff below you is paramount. A recent example of this (personally) is when I had new directives to pass on to my subordinates. I have an old “salty dog” on my squad, but he is the informal leader. Knowing this, I decided to engage him directly in this directive and give him some ownership. This tactic proved to be fruitful and he had great ideas for implementation. Once I presented these plans to the rest of the team, he provided support and gave no push back. Trust in your people and their abilities. Though you may feel you want to control everything all of the time, know and accept, your way isn’t always the best. Engage your subordinates in one on one conversations and listen.

One thing I've found helpful is be someone you can be depended on. Be an expert in your field or skills to be respected, depended on and being sort after by your bosses and colleagues for your input in clinical meetings, decision making etc. In doing so, you build trust for some works to be delegated for you to lead.
