Here's how you can stay updated on new technologies as a programmer.

Blog posts on Medium have been my go-to for keeping up to date! You'd be surprised at the effectiveness of Medium's blog recommendations--they work quite well. Start reading up on a few blogs on Medium and watch the recommendations roll in!

I strongly feel tech blogs are the best way to stay on par with latest tech advancements. In my field of machine learning which is rapidly growing its quite hard to find resources online while dealing with cutting edge tech like LLMs, RAG, Deep Reinforcement Learning etc. One has to be able to decipher research papers and build models which is quite challenging. Research blogs that give break-down of these research journal come in quite handy to learn and foster engineers with their respective programmatic challenges. The best solutions for the issues that I faced are found in either research journals or research blogs. I encourage engineers to follow more of research oriented approach when dealing with research oriented fields like ML.

On Internet Days, lots of news travels fast online, like on tech blogs and during events. When I want to learn stuff, I usually go to tech blogs and Quora. They're super helpful,For example things like embedded systems. Quora stands out because it has both stories from people's experiences and articles about new tech stuff in different areas. This mix of real-life stories and helpful articles not only helps me understand things better but also keeps me up-to-date with what's happening in embedded systems and other tech fields. So, Quora is where I go to learn and share knowledge about tech stuff that's always changing.

In my experience, reading tech blogs has improved my understanding of complex concepts and motivated me to experiment and innovate in my projects. Here are some platforms I've used: 1. dev.to - This platform is for coders to share knowledge, stay updated, and advance their careers. 2. github.blog - GitHub's focus on developer-centric content makes it unique. It provides tutorials, case studies, and updates on open-source projects hosted on the platform. 3. uxdesign.cc - This platform offers curated stories on user experience (UX), visual, and product design. 4. towardsdatascience.com - Specifically for data science, this Medium publication shares concepts, ideas, and code related to the field.

Los repositorios públicos en GitHub son buenas fuentes de información. No es necesario que contribuyas en ellos. Pero el solo hecho de navegar entre sus ficheros y carpetas, ver que dependencias utilizan, los ejemplos que incorporan, etc... aprenderás mucho sobre organización de código, forma de trabajar y bibliotecas útiles.

My first open-source contribution was to a small project I found on GitHub. Despite initial hesitations, the community was welcoming, and through this experience, I learned more about Git and code reviews than I had in previous jobs.

To get started on open source projects, first create an account on a popular public repository like GitHub (for code) or HuggingFace (for AI models). Then share your code or your AI models. This will teach you the mechanics of the repository: creating your own repositories, downloading (cloning), and uploading code, and all the commands needed to maintain your own code. Once you are comfortable with the mechanics of repositories, try cloning someone else's repository and contributing features. It is so rewarding to help create software capabilities used by the community!

To learn a new technology not sure open sources projects are the best option. Well documented projects are big and complex ones and small projects are just going as fast as possible to be visible.

Last year, I had an opportunity to participate in the MIT Hacking Medicine GrandHack and we had to come with solution for combatting diabetic foot ulcer. The whole endeavor proved to be very fruitful because of the sheer diversity of participants from different industries, as we could each learn from one another and come up with the best AI/ML solution for our challenge. It was an immense learning experience to see different perspectives and use cases of AI that different teams explored, giving everyone an opportunity to learn of pros and cons, realistic use and better understanding of the problem.

Attend networking events as if they're wild parties (which they can be, with the right kind of nerds). Exchange business cards like they’re Pokémon cards; gotta catch 'em all! You might not leave with a Charizard, but perhaps a contact who knows React like the back of their hand.

Attending tech conferences and meetups is not only about networking and learning; it’s also an opportunity to gain practical insights from industry experts, discover innovative solutions to common challenges, and stay inspired by the creativity and passion of fellow developers/programmes. Additionally, participating in workshops and hands-on sessions allows for immersive learning experiences, enabling you to deepen your understanding of new technologies and their real-world applications.

Do not underestimate networking. I used not to appreciate enough the power of a strong network when I was younger and I was focused more on my technical skills. Strong network skills are a must, but make sure that you create and retain your network over the years; you will find that sometimes it's the most important thing.

I don't really like spending time on social media. It's not very productive in my opinion, you'd need to sift through so much garbage to find good content. I'd rather read an article or a book. Of course there are some very good creators on social media, but the amount of trash content makes it not very worthwhile.

I stay updated on the latest tech trends by following tech channels on Telegram, subscribing to tech YouTube channels, and keeping an eye on Twitter accounts dedicated to tech discussions and insights. It's about diversifying your sources to get a well-rounded understanding of what's happening in the tech world.

I subscribe to some channels in YouTube, I have also created an unlisted channel in YouTube that I use to post videos to explain some topics of the courses I teach. I participate in discussions in LinkedIn and I mainly use LinkedIn to keep in touch with ex-students and see what is going on in their careers as well as help them whenever they "ask for help" or opinion. I try to follow companies that I respect and some developers that I have listened to at certain webinars/seminars I participated.

Follow tech influencers on social media as though they’re celebrities. Twitter, LinkedIn, and even Instagram can be gold mines of information, sandwiched between cat videos and photos of people's lunches.

One thing I've found helpful in staying updated on new technologies is leveraging podcasts and videos during my daily commutes. As a programmer, finding time to explore emerging technologies can be challenging amidst busy schedules. However, utilizing this commute time allows me to satisfy my curiosity and stay informed about the latest developments in the tech industry. In my experience, programmers can leverage YouTube for tech updates by following credible programming channels. Explore diverse topics from languages to methodologies. Capture key ideas and solidify them through coding practice or projects. Join live sessions for interactive learning.

In the software sector, being up to date on emerging technology is essential for success. It's critical to stay current with advances if you want to grow in your career. For myself, I feel that viewing videos and podcasts is a great way to learn about new technologies and get advice from more experienced engineers. Podcasts present a variety of viewpoints, and going over your notes afterwards aids in understanding.

Channels like Fireship, Kevin Powell, and Net Ninja not only provide updates but also offer comprehensive courses. These creators are experts in their fields, making their content both reliable and insightful. Surprisingly, I've also gained crucial insights into better coding practices through YouTube Shorts. These brief videos can effectively convey key information in a digestible format. Overall, YouTube is an excellent platform for acquiring a high-level understanding of various topics, blending educational depth with accessibility.

It is important to stay updated with the latest academic research in the field. It may take a while for the research to be translated into industry tools and practices. In addition to following blogs and talks, reading the latest proceedings from conferences and journals may help in catching up with upcoming trends to stay on top of the field.

Create a habit of checking tech news regularly (no need to become obsessed though). HackerNews, Thoughtworks Tech Radar, The Verge is a good set of example web properties that you can keep your self informed about the latest tech trends.

Avoid becoming a script kiddie who merely copies and modifies someone else’s code, a strategy I refer to as the CAT strategy. It’s common for many individuals, when faced with a new programming task under time constraints, to resort to this strategy. However, as a professional, it’s crucial to strive for a deep understanding of how the code operates and, whenever possible, to be capable of implementing it from scratch. The temptation to simply copy and tweak code from the internet or, in today’s world, from AI, is strong. But the bottom line is that a thorough comprehension of code enables you to innovate more effectively.

To keep abreast of new technologies, programmers can engage in various activities such as following tech blogs, joining online communities, attending conferences, taking online courses, reading industry publications, working on side projects and fostering a mindset of continuous learning. These diverse approaches collectively ensure that programmers remain well-informed about the latest trends and advancements in technology. Please keep in mind: working on side projects is an amazing way to learn something new. The project does not necessarily need to be a paid one. It could be your research project using the new technology.

Programming is thinking. Keep in mind that every new technology has two components: Syntax and paradigm. Each new language comes with its own syntax. Don't waste too much time learning it. You can easily look it up. But only every so often does a new programming paradigm come along. They are harder to learn and need practice. Your first object oriented program will suck and so will your first functional program. So be ever curious about new and old programming paradigms. Test them, use them, play with them.
