Back when the workforce was less remote, we used to have "desksides," where PR people and their clients would come in and meet reporters and editors in a newsroom. Thanks to the digitalization of communications and platforms like Teams and Zoom, now we can do these virtually and they have proven to be great. I have had so many valuable conversations using digital tools and its well worth the small investment to get yourself set up on these platforms. It also makes your reporting a whole lot easier.

Funny thing: In the last few years, email etiquette and follow-up have fallen off the map. It's likely due to a wide variety of issues--mostly thanks to consolidation and downsizing in the journalism space--editors are more slammed than ever and rarely respond to emails at all. The best way to try and cut through the noise is to keep your emails succinct, tight, and to the point. If you don't hear back after a week, follow up once. Beyond that, assume that it's a pass on the opportunity.

Good journalism isn't just about asking the right questions; it's also about being an excellent listener. When you're on a call or a video chat with a source, give them your undivided attention.
