I sometimes look at stories I published years ago and think, "Man, that lede was really flat. A different opener would have been much more powerful and set the story up more effectively." You get better by honestly assessing your past work and having others also weigh in. If your newsroom does performance evaluations, make sure to engage in that process. Perhaps your writing needs work. Maybe your understanding of the beat could be more sophisticated. Whatever it is, you can't improve unless you are aware of what you need to work on.

This is a stressful job by nature, and it's made even more stressful knowing a large segment of the population strongly dislike journalists and regard media as a monolith. Don't do what I did as a young reporter — journalism should not be all-consuming. People need outlets for stress. Please develop hobbies and interests outside of journalism. Being a well rounded person who can rely on advice and counsel from close family and friends will put one in a better position to respond to difficult moments.
