October 14 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. This day celebrates and honors the Indigenous communities that have lived in the Americas for thousands of years. In observance of the day, HCM is hosting an in-house education seminar from The Tipi Raisers, a nonprofit that engages youth and volunteers of all ages to address conditions of poverty on Native reservations, amplify Indigenous wisdom, and create unique opportunities for reconciliation and youth development. HCM's Emelia Torres and her husband recently spent four days with Tipi Raisers in the Navajo Nation. They helped build a tiny house that provides plumbing to a Hopi family that has lived in a 150-year-old house without running water for two years. HCMers recently competed in the annual Canstruction competition, a Denver city-wide competition in which architects and designers build life-size structures entirely from canned food. At the end of the exhibit, the structures will be donated to We Don't Waste and distributed to local communities. This year's theme is "Home Sweet Home," so the team constructed a cabin in the Rocky Mountains and used over 1,800 cans! At the recent AIA DC awards ceremony, HCM brought home not just one but two trophies! The Wren, a vibrant mixed-use development in Washington, DC, received the evening's only award for a multifamily project, the “Award in Distinctive Residential Design,” and the renovation of the DC Bilingual Charter School earned the chapter’s highest honor, an “Award in Architecture.”

HCM has been recognized as a semi-finalist in the Healthcare Design Breaking Through annual design contest! The competition honors the most imaginative, innovative, and inspiring ideas for solving the challenges expected in the future delivery of healthcare. Breaking Through isn’t about what’s already been designed; it’s about what could be if the usual rules didn’t apply. HCM's concept "Healing the Heartland" tackled the challenges of rural healthcare delivery in collaboration with the School of Nursing at Montana State University. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4gOAdqb
