I’m not a professional Geologist, but having studied both Geology and Geophysics at University and worked in both the Oil/Gas and Renewables Industry I would add the following: In terms of transferrable skills then a lot of the software skills and methodology would be similar but used on a different sense of scale. The study of shallower rather than deeper geology. Geology for the renewable sector is focused primarily on shallower and younger geological timescale. Thus sedimentology and the depositional environment would be more relevant. ‘Soft Rock’ as opposed to ‘Hard Rock’ that is more typically associated with deeper geology interpreted or accessed in the Oil/Gas Industry and other fossil fuel or mineral industry disciplines.

It is important for one to upskill yourself in terms of the skills required. In oil and gas one is interested in horizon markers at great depth (km scale). However with renewable energy geotechnical studies forecast on the shallow subsurface (m scale). One then has to think of the geophysical data collection systems that can resolve the shallow subsurface (i.e. high/er frequency systems) rather than deep seated formation markers.

Believe in the mission. If you are only transitioning for future job security or to maximise business opportunities then forget it. Your work needs to align with your values. The energy transition challenge is big and we need passionate people. Transferable skills are what geos are all about and they are even more useful when driven by the desire to make positive change.

To transfer from one mining industry vertical to another, focus primarily on understanding where your transferable skills can best be applied in the new role - such skills are invariably managment related (and can include marketing and communication, fund raising, collaboration, strategy development etc). It is worth remembering that professionals (geologists included) moving into a new industry vertical are strongly motivated to quickly acquire new and most relevant knowledge from the latest up-to-date sources, and within 6 months should have acquired enough content to perform competently, and within a year or two to become regarded within their peer group as domain specialists.

The response to this question can be on a career stabilisation and renewal or it can be on a practical resource level. The career comments are well outlined above in the article response. A fundamental issue is that oil and gas are still fundamental to the global energy mix in terms of creating renewable energy options. To find the components to create renewable energy currently the ink practical way to search on land or in the oceans is to use energy from oil and gas to search for the resources. The transition time without total government and community commitment will be much longer than expected and recycling and reuse of components are essential. Creating a no waste or circular economy should be every governments’s primary goal.
