When conveying your creative ideas to others, you must make them see the value of it. This means appealing to your audience -even directly appealing to their emotions. Creating visuals are a great way to do this. This means backing up your idea with solid information. No matter how crazy your idea is, there is a "why" behind it, and it's up to you to make your audience see the importance of that "why".

Identify the way they like to communicate, the language they use, and the concepts that make the core of their ideology, and picture yourself as one. Because if you don't identify yourself with your public, you will not be able to deliver your message efficiently, be one with them, and enjoy the talk.

When it comes to sharing your creative ideas, over-communication is the key. Most creative ideas are conceptual. They exist where nothing like it has existed before. They may be clear in your head, but to other people—especially those who would say they aren't creative—they won't automatically get it. So make it easy for them by: —Drawing parallels. Is your new idea like something they might understand? Make that connection. —Use words, pictures, sketches, sounds. Tap into their senses to bring your idea to life. —Say more than you think you need to. Address objections on the front end; think about where confusion might occur and address it early. Believe in your idea and work hard to communicate it well and you minimize confusion.

With truly creative ideas, products, and services you can't just tell someone about them and expect them to grasp the true value. You have to show them. You have to build or visualize something in a way that they can experience the new thing. You have to give them something to respond and react to. You need to build some sort of prototype that helps them experience (not just cognitively understand) what it is you are trying to convey.

Great creative ideas make people FEEL something. Did you see the recent ad Apple released for the iPad pro? It went terribly wrong because it made people feel like technology was squeezing (pun intended) the life out of all the things they loved. Right or wrong, they made us feel something deeply. You can use this in a positive way to tap into people's: —Aspirations. How will your idea help them obtain a goal? —Emotions. How will your idea tap into their feelings on an emotional level. —Memories. How will your idea connect to their memories and bring them to life? —Hopes. How will your idea cause them to be more hopeful and excited about the future? Engaging emotionally means connecting with your audience at a soul level.

Agree that creative ideas often need to grab people on an emotional level. What’s also incredibly important is the emotion with which a creative idea is communicated. This is partially because I want to feel confident that the team pitching me the idea has the passion necessary to execute it in the most compelling way possible. In the same way that a well written joke can be delivered poorly on stage, simply having a creative idea is not enough. I want to be convinced of the conviction of the team to turn the idea into something truly special. You want people to look at the work, whatever it is, and think, “I can tell that someone took the time to make this exceptional.” That’s what I’m looking for when people share creative ideas with me.

Practicing a pitch can take many forms both formal and informal and, while not often discussed, it’s perhaps the informal practice you can do that can make the biggest difference. Before you even construct your pitch you should be testing and honing the basic ideas of your pitch by simply telling other people what you plan to say in your presentation and what the main points will be. You can do this at your one on one with your manager, with your teammates, with your colleagues and maybe even with family or friends who may not even be in your line of work. Think about what big universal ideas you are anchoring to that holds everything together. Practice the best way to convey your story informally before getting to a formal pitch.

Ask questions. Lots of them. Then listen and ask more. My go to is: "Does that make sense?" The feedback you get will help you do a few things: 1. Learn to communicate more effectively. If this is a creative idea you hope to build on, then gathering feedback and refining your message is critical. 2. Refine your creative idea. Feedback helps you discover what parts of your idea are unformed or unrealistic. You can refine it and make it better. 3. Create buy-in. By asking for feedback and addressing it on the spot you are able to deal with objections early and create buy-in from your stakeholders. Sharing your creative idea isn't a "one-and-done," it must be done continually in order to make it stick.

The game is rarely won in a single meeting. The first step is to take the extra time to develop an incredibly well thought out pitch that has true depth and can be expressed simply and succinctly. Once you have this, and have expressed it once, you need to use this as the touchstone for a number of future communications, provided it was well received. It’s also important to understand what you need additional clearance on before moving forward and what you can proceed with without any further approval. Best to establish that in your first key meeting.
