Just as a glue gun squeezes out heated glue, the 3D printer’s nozzle squeezes out thin lines of material, stacking them on top of each other until the object is fully formed.

There are various types of 3D printers, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. For instance, Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) printers are like the workhorses of 3D printing, great for creating durable prototypes. On the other hand, Stereolithography (SLA) printers are like artists, producing highly detailed and smooth objects. By comparing these printers to familiar roles, non-technical team members can better grasp their differences and applications.

When helping others understand how 3D printing technologies work, I like to draw analogies from everyday life. For FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printers, the process is similar to using an automated glue gun - the material is extruded and bonded together in a specific pattern to create the final product. This real-world comparison helps people visualize how the technology works. In contrast, SLA (Stereolithography) printing is more like building with paper cutouts. Imagine stacking multiple layers of cutout shapes on top of each other to create a 3D object - this is similar to how SLA printers use laser light to solidify liquid resin layer by layer to produce the final part.

SLA actually does not use a laser, it uses UV light projected through a screen similar to phone or tablet screens. The UV light hardens the resin where it shines and this creates a layer of hardened plastic. Each subsequent layer is fused to the preceding layer.

There are various 3D printing methods available today, with SLA and FDM being the most widely used and oldest. FDM works by depositing layers of material. Imagine using a glue gun to trace and fill a square, letting it cool to form the first layer. Repeating this process layer by layer, you eventually build a cube. SLA, on the other hand, uses a resin pool that hardens when exposed to UV light. An inverted bed sinks into the resin, and a UV display projects an image from below, hardening the resin layer by layer.

Accurate design for manufacturing and assembly allows for lesser iterations and just better outcomes. One great way to start about it is understanding your 3D printer's and material's limitations and design with that in mind with your CAD software. Eg: If you struggle with getting tolerances right, 3D print a tolerance test with your 3D printer and then adjust designs accordingly for future prints.

No need to think about how to cut away material inside of the material like the traditional cutting method ( like CNC). However, there are still design techniques that you must consider when using 3D printing. These techniques are called DfAM or design for additive manufacturing.

Parameters like resolution, support and orientation needs to be controlled in a very optimistic way in order to be proficient in 3D printing. All of these parameters help you achieve your desired results in desired time. Resolution is how fine or coarse you need your model to be. The finer the model the higher the layer cohesion. Supports help to make your structure stand on the print bed. Some structure in your design might not come out the same as designed due to lack of support. So one need to add support wherever required. Based on type and direction of force applied on a part the orientation of the part on print bed is decided. If the orientation is incorrect the part might fail in operations.

Printing parameters are like the settings on a washing machine. You need to choose the right settings for the best results. For example, layer height is like the water level – too high or too low can affect the outcome. Print speed is like the wash cycle – too fast can cause issues, while too slow can be inefficient. By relating printing parameters to everyday settings, non-technical team members can better understand their importance.

Explain the various printing parameters such as layer height, printing speed and filling pattern. Demonstrate how to adjust these parameters to optimize the print quality and strength of the bottle opener. Conduct hands-on exercises where team members can adjust these parameters and see their effects directly. ??

I recommend always allotting at least 10% margin in the expected time of 3D Printing projects, if not 25% if the final product quality matters. While the technology is getting better daily, it is still prone to unexpected challenges. Restarts are may be required, post-print clean up can run into unexpected snags. The second recommendation, and cannot be stressed enough, is the technician preforming the 3D printing should be listened to and potentially consulted before starting a project. It is often the case that adding supports or reorienting a part can make it significantly easier to print. They will know when this is the case.
