Understanding fundamental principles of translation ensures success in the field, but one often overlooks the most important aspect in translation field: it has to be as seamless as possible. That means becoming “invisible”. Ask yourself if you can handle this task before you even consider becoming a translator. You have to ignore your emotions, opinions, inputs on the subject you work on. You have to focus on rendering speaker’s thought in the most accurate and influential way, even when you deeply disagree. You have to wear neutral business colors in your clothing and a neutral perfume. Is this something you are great at doing or is this something you are willing to do? In my opinion this is one of the basics translators have to master.
