The best example I've seen of this during an interview is from someone who spoke of relationships and then said, "You can contact whoever you like, one of these people is a reference." If it is a leadership position you are interviewing for, then make sure your stories reflect your relationship-building skills in this context. For example, I have shared a story of how I spent the first 3 months of a new senior leadership role I stepped into dedicating my time to meeting and getting to know colleagues across each area I needed to work with to establish a solid network across the organisation.

As a consultant, I often heard colleagues mention the “airport test” in assessing candidates. This means that the interviewer will close their eyes and envision the candidate with them stranded at an airport for several hours during a delayed flight. Will that person be a pleasure to be stuck with, a hassle, or something neutral in between? As you go in an interview, think about the energy you are emitting. Do you look like you are professional and happy and having fun, or do you looked stressed and unconfident? People want to be around people who lift them up, not bring them down. A nice smile can go a long way in projecting that you are someone who would be nice to work with.

At the end of the interview, ask insightful questions that demonstrate your interest in building relationships within the company, such as: “How does the team collaborate on projects?” “What opportunities are there for cross-departmental interaction?”

It is always good to pre-prepare a list of insightful and thoughtful questions you can ask during an interview. These will show your level of reflection and commitment coming into the interview. Make sure you don't have 'cookie cutter' questions though. Think about the things that are important to you as a leader that you want to know more about? Is it around the organisational culture, team dynamics or their commitment to ongoing professional development for staff? Maybe you want to ask a challenging question if appropriate (e.g. perhaps the organisation has just navigated a restructure and you want to understand the current context better). You want your questions to be relevant but also show your enthusiasm, awareness and intellect.

Highlighting flexibility in relationship building during an interview involves demonstrating your adaptability in various interpersonal situations. Adaptability: Discuss how you adjust your communication and interaction style based on the individual or situation. Open-mindedness: Share examples of being open to new ideas and willing to change your approach. Problem-solving: Highlight how you resolve issues by adapting your strategies to fit the needs of the relationship.

Here is a “wildcard” question that you can ask your interviewer that might create a connection: “You were in this seat some time in the past as a candidate interviewing for a job here. What was your experience like and what advice do you wish someone had given you?” The superficial purpose of this question is partly to get some useful advice. The underlying purpose of this question is to make them think back about their own interview experience and associate you with it. Maybe they will give you the benefit of the doubt or subconsciously cheer for you. Note, that I do say this is a “wildcard” question because there is a risk it could backfire if the interviewer aced their interview and holds you to that standard.

In any interview, the best advice is to be yourself. You need to be professional and poised, but the interviewers need to see 'you'. That is when you will be your most genuine and have the capacity to generate a real connection with your interviewer. For example, it's ok to admit you are a bit nervous or need a moment to think about your answer. It is also ok to let them know what is important to you in terms of the role you are looking for and the organisation you want to work for. Don't forget to ask the interviewers about them if given the opportunity (especially if they work in the area the role is based). Asking for their insights and finding common ground can show your desire to connect and can help leave a lasting impression.

You need to do this first hand and make it personal to the interviewer. Find a personal connection with them. Ideally research this in advance, but if you can’t, then ask them some questions at the beginning to find a connection before you dive in to the meat of the interview. Ask good questions, and if you have a panel, ask a specific question to each member of the panel based on their role or experience. You want each one of them engaged with and invested in you.
