If a situation affects your ability to meet deadlines or complete projects, clear communication explaining the circumstances is imperative. While there is probably no need to go overboard with hourly or daily "updates," letting them know about the status and circumstances affecting it is important. This is because sometimes a goal your supervisor expects you to complete may be necessary for them to meet the expectations at the next level. Your delay in compiling statistics (for whatever reason) may affect their performance evaluation if it puts them behind on their deadlines. Don't be afraid to include requests for assistance or accommodation if the circumstances merit. If the responses you receive are hostile, be prepared to go to HR.

Communication is a two-way street. Be sure that you keep your conversations and work-related communications in a professional tone. If there are tensions or if you have experienced difficulties in the past, be sure to keep a record of your communications. You may also want to send a blind-copy of your message to your outside email, if possible. When you receive communications that are vague or ambiguous ("Your time talking with the patron was too long"), request clarification. Are there policies in place, or are the expectations placed upon you arbitrary? Finally, if a bad situation escalates, you may find it necessary to include the library director, HR, or others on your communications. In these cases, use clarity and professionalism.

In nearly every job, flexibility is necessary. You may notice the reference not covered for a period of time and have to step in because your colleague on duty is helping someone away from the desk. Similarly, job duties evolve within short durations (such as during a project) or longer periods (such as when expanded programs require you to do more with less).
