Offer your services for free. Volunteer for a project. Anything like that serves several functions. 1)It keeps your skills tuned, 2) the work/project you are doing are line items on a resume which helps fill the date gap, 3)shows ambition, and 4) helps another organization and that's just good Karma. I am talking about reaching out to non-profits and volunteer organizations who might have value for your skills. Do your research, reach out on LinkedIn to people who are already connected there, and find out about opportunities, projects, and challenges where you can fit in. It's win win. And it keep you in the game.

Invest in a professional resume service. For some people, it may have been a while since you were interviewing, so your resume may be outdated. After my layoff, I worked with a professional resume advisor who showed me how non-modern my resume was. I had to modernize the visual look. She also advised me on aggressive wording - some of which I agreed with and some not --- so make sure the resume is still in your voice and communicates what/how you want it. As you apply to each job, make sure that you align your experiences with the qualifications in the job post. It does not have to match perfectly, but make sure the person reading it clearly sees the connection.
