Here's how you can respectfully communicate with individuals from different cultures.

The most important thing is to be open-minded. It's okay not to know something but asking politely can enrich conversation. For example, if you're not sure how to pronounce someone's cultural name, it's okay to ask! Don't assume and don't ask for a nickname. Instead, be polite and ask the person to say the name out loud. It will show care and willingness to learn. Similarly, in other situations, it's okay to ask. However, be mindful not to put too much pressure on peer education. If it can be googled, do that instead before asking another person. That can eliminate potential microaggressions or assumptions.

Active Listening - two words advocated by so many and yet difficult to achieve in all practicality. Many of us tend to start pushing thoughts, ideas, "solutions", shortly after a conversation starts. Add in the distractions of a mobile phone, or smart watch sending notifications of this and that. Before a conversation even begins, perhaps one should remove the distractions first. It shows respect even before the first word is spoken. We can then focus on what is being shared, and what is unspoken.

Active listening is a skill that will carry you very far. Across all fields, the top leaders are the ones who effectively listen to their staff and understand their needs.

I find in my speaking programs that I ask questions to people of different cultures and listen very carefully to their phrasing and where they are focused?. Often there's a miscommunication because they don't understand or catch the nuance of what I am saying. Frequently I will repeat what I'm saying in different ways so they catch the meaning in the conversation. I listen intently to their response. And ask further questions.

I would stretch this point further to add that we need to give each other the benefit of the doubt. For example, the word "doubt" might have a slight negative connotation but it's used interchangeably in Latin America with the word "question". So if someone says "I have some doubts about what you just said", this person isn't questioning your credibility, he/she just has questions!

In my programs I make sure that I address varying levels of understanding so as not to jump to conclusions. Often we formulate a narrative that is completely inaccurate because of how we are seeing it, not necessarily how it is being expressed.

I make it a point to research cultural norms of the demographic population I will be speaking for. Learning how people approach others is very important to bridging cultural norms.

In my experience working with professionals coming from different cultural backgrounds and communities, I’ve found that a humble approach goes a long way and benefits us both. Humility leads to willingness to learn from one another, acknowledging that having different perspectives in a subject or situation enriches our approach to it.
