Becoming a leader in Information Security is not different from any other field.. developing relevant skills and keeping ourselves updated are important however, what is more important is to understand the meaning of leadership. Whatever role you have, you can still be a leader if you behave like one. If you believe in team work, help others to grow, stand with your colleagues and subordinates to resolve the issues. If you can create healthy environment around you. If people are comfortable with your attitude and come to younfor the resolution of the problems at work. You are already a leader. Otherwise you can become a head but not a leader.

If you're looking to take the next step in your career and become a Cybersecurity Leader, I have a few suggestions. First, make sure you know about all the different security domains. You don't have to be an expert in every single one, but it's important to have a solid understanding of each. Second, get as much experience and exposure as you can. The more you know, the better. Third, make sure you're staying up-to-date on the latest trends in Cybersecurity. Finally, never forget the importance of GRC (Governance, Risk Management, and Compliance). As a Cybersecurity Leader, you'll often find yourself caught between GRC and the technical aspects of the job, so it's important to be able to understand and navigate both sides effectively.

Developing the necessary expertise and leadership skills to excel in an information security leadership role involves a combination of education, experience, skill development, and personal growth. A strong educational foundation in computer science, cybersecurity, or even a related field is a good starting point. However, there are trail-blazing leaders with unrelated degrees who have developed themselves over time by having a well-rounded understanding of the industry with hands-on experience in various roles within the cybersecurity field. Leadership skills can be further developed by taking courses, attending workshops, or pursuing a degree in business administration or management.

While you do require expertise and skills in multiple areas to grow and become a leader, you do not need to know all the skills, where your team can step in with their expertise. The skill you need to develop before becoming a leader is understanding the areas so you can contribute effectively.

Soft skills are an important part of a leader's journey. Cybersecurity is a function that runs horizontally across the organisation and you need to deal with multiple stakeholders on a regular basis. The ability to lead your team while maintaining effective communication with other stakeholders is an essential component of any leader's arsenal.

Soft skills are a vital part of maturing as an Information Security professional, especially when your goals are to become a leader on your team and within the organization. Being able to articulate your research, investigative analysis, thought process on whatever your focus area is within security, will allow you to inadvertently start mentoring and leading within your current roll. It could be as simple as documenting your work so that others can review and understand. That small action creates an environment for growth. Now your team can build a knowledge base with historical analysis, which expedites future analysis, and if there is enough volume or need you can then build an SOP to guide others through similar scenarios.

In my experience, effective communication is crucial in InfoSec leadership. I once had to explain a complex security breach to our board of directors; by breaking down technical jargon into simple terms, I ensured everyone understood the gravity of the situation and our response plan.

?Continuous Learning: Stay updated with industry trends, emerging threats, and new technologies through courses, certifications, and networking. ?Develop Technical Expertise: Deepen your understanding of core security concepts, tools, and frameworks. Hands-on experience is invaluable. ?Build Soft Skills: Enhance communication, negotiation, and leadership skills. Effective leadership requires the ability to inspire and guide teams. ?Understand Business Context: Align security initiatives with business objectives. ?Gain Experience: Seek opportunities to lead projects, manage teams, and make strategic decisions. ?Stay Ethical and Professional: Uphold ethical standards and maintain professionalism in all interactions.

Technical knowledge is vital, but soft skills are equally important for leadership. Effective communication is necessary to explain complex security issues to non-technical stakeholders and lead your team. Security leaders have to be able to break down technical jargon into language the entire business can understand. Develop skills like empathy, conflict resolution, and public speaking to create a cooperative security culture. Being able to mentor personnel, negotiate with vendors, and present to top management or boards will improve your leadership capabilities and help build cohesive teams. Additionally, soft skills are essential in order to gain trust to buy into the security culture, and have influence throughout the organization.

This is the one item where all of the skills come together. Defining and communicating a compelling vision requires technical skill, ability to navigate different subject matter area, domains, understanding your business, networking, battle scars, ambition, and hope and the ability to embrace change. Knowing what to do is not enough. But building a a story that aligns with the mission of the company that propels and compels people to contribute to making that vision happen is the most essential part of this leadership role.

Number one look at your enterprise risk register as a whole, ask your self how are your security initiatives mitigating these risks and saving the business costs? Remember with the board and top management growing revenue and saving costs are some of their main objectives.

To quote Mike Tyson; "Everyone has a Plan until they get punch on the Face". Haven't all the compromised companies have a Vision, a Strategy, a Plan? Then, what happens to the IS leaders of those companies when there's a major compromise? Having sound working relationships with our businesses partners and third parties alike so that when the inevitable happens one is able to help the corporation resume its business as soon as possible, are essential attributes of an IS leader.

As a leader in Information Security, I align my strategic vision with our organization's goals. This involves deeply understanding our business context and how security initiatives contribute to our overall success. My forward-thinking approach focuses on protecting current systems while also planning for future growth and potential threats. I demonstrate how robust security measures can enable our business objectives, such as protecting intellectual property, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining customer trust. By integrating security into our business strategy, I transform it from a cost center to a value driver, enhancing our competitive edge and operational efficiency.

Following up on soft skills, networking widely helps you understand the intricacies while gaining knowledge. This also helps enhance your profile so you become trusted.

Trying to be a jack of all trades, makes us a master of none. We need to focus on mastery in our area of interest, inline with our strengths and then capitalize on the strengths of our connections, to cover all bases. Thus networking is fundamentally important, as it helps build the required commotions which we can tap into, during various phases of our leadership journey.

Master Core: Cryptography, access control, network security, incident response, data security - build a rock-solid foundation. Specialize & Stay Current: Deep dive in cloud, app security, or threat intel. Stay updated with publications & community engagement. Leadership Skills: Effective communication, collaboration, strategic thinking, & data-driven decision-making are key. Gain Experience: Technical roles (pen testing, SIR, architecture) & project/people management hone skills & leadership potential. Build Your Network: Connect with influencers, find a mentor, & consider becoming one yourself. Certifications:Consider CISSP, CISM, or CCSP Beyond Tech: Develop business acumen & understand how InfoSec impacts the organization's goals.

One thing I've found helpful is joining professional organizations like (ISC)2 or ISACA. Being part of these groups provided access to exclusive resources and networking events where I could connect with like-minded professionals dedicated to advancing InfoSec practices.

Networking is crucial for advancing in Information Security leadership. Build relationships with peers, mentors, and industry experts to gain insights and opportunities that go beyond formal education. In addition Security Leaders should participate in Public-Private Security Partnerships to stay abreast of current threats. Such groups include relevant Information Sharing and Analysis Centers (ISACs), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) etc. Finally, security leaders should network among their peers as well. These connections can offer support, advice, and career advancement as you move toward leadership roles, helping you stay informed and connected in the constantly evolving field of cybersecurity.

Project management skills are indispensable for any prospective Information Security leader. I am often tasked with overseeing complex projects that span multiple departments and require coordination among diverse teams. Understanding project management methodologies is crucial for setting realistic timelines, managing budgets, and ensuring deliverables are met. By successfully managing security projects, I demonstrate my capability to handle leadership responsibilities and align security initiatives with our organization's goals. Effective project management allows me to drive projects to completion efficiently, showcasing my ability to lead and deliver results.
