As a teacher, coach and mentor, I believe you need to be able to understand what your "coachee/client" needs you to provide, and when they need this, in order to provide value. It's fine to "stay in coach mode", but for me, context and urgency matters. For example. I remember being asked for help by a colleague (to provide feedback on negative behaviour towards her) and I taught and coached her to use a simple, effective and widely known framework "S.B.I.A", - What was the Situation - What was the Behaviour - What was the Impact of the behaviour - What Action would be taken to "fix/stop the behaviour in the future" Is not "strictly coaching" but it worked and helped my colleague - which was more important.

One very helpful metaphor in coaching is that of a "point of view". Our life is a landscape which we navigate based on maps we have created through our life experiences and learnings. A coach not bound by our maps helps us get a new and at times surprising perspective on the landscape of life. for example, one might be viewing a mountain as an obstacle and working on plans to climb the mountain. Often people are strung along continually told - do this then you will get the promotion, then do that. You’re not enough of this, too much of that. It’s a shell game. When I work with clients who are looking to advance their career about 1/3 we get the promotion, 1/3 we move to another LOB in the company where the persons strengths can be celebrated instead of tolerated. The final 1/3 we move into outside roles for higher compensation and better cultural fit. You have to be able to read the situation and I always say you can’t see the picture when you are in the frame. With a coach you will see it way faster.
