Here's how you can promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

It can be difficult to carry out this step in a firm in which you are lacking diversity - your question is rather ‘why don’t X people want to work here?’ than ‘how could I be better?’ which can be hard to answer in the absence of X. Consider reaching out to community groups and local people to ask for impressions and reviews of your external presentation and why this might not be attracting certain groups.

Creating a community of belonging means removing assumptions. You may have had a great way of doing this in the past, but each organization has it's own unique group of people and people drive the culture. Your first step should always be to audit where you are now, through surveys and focus groups, to understand where and when people feel included, and where they do not. Audit your career mobility programs to see if everyone really does have the same opportunities. If you want to inspire inclusion, you need to listen first.

Getting the right data to be able to really understand the current experience and then where energy needs to be spent can be a key objective and where a lot of businesses need to start. Understanding the diversity across the demographic make up of the organisation is step one, and the first choice is what data to capture and where in the employee journey you ask for it. Some of what you can ask will be driven by the local law. In the past I’ve seen organisations struggle because they’ve not captured the range of data they really need to inform the experience that they build. A good example is disability data which a question that is commonly asked but neurodiversity is not. This means the usability of the data to inform action is limited.

Executive coaching can serve as a platform for educating both staff and leadership on the importance of diversity and inclusion. Coaches can facilitate workshops, seminars, or training sessions that raise awareness about unconscious biases, privilege, and the benefits of diversity in the workplace. By providing insights, tools, and strategies for recognizing and addressing bias, coaching empowers individuals at all levels to become advocates for diversity and inclusion. Personally, I've led coaching sessions that incorporate educational components on topics such as cultural competence, inclusive leadership, and mitigating bias in decision-making. This sparks meaningful discussions and inspired participants to champion diversity.

Para promover la diversidad y la inclusión en el lugar de trabajo es fundamental focalizar en la educación de las personas para crear un ambiente ameno y de bienestar para todos. Una prioridad básica es el entrenamiento de los líderes, que son los que más pueden incidir positivamente en episodios controvertidos, o que no favorecen la integración general. Y aquí funciona el concepto de desaprender para aprender nuevas maneras de coordinar equipos. El desaprender refiere al comportamiento del pasado, que resultan poco integradores de las diferencias individuales. Deconstruir los prejuicios antiguos y reemplazarlos por concepciones que valoran la singularidad y el aporte particular que puede brindar cada uno.

Education is the fundamental basis for change, from respectful inclusion to values. I will never forget a workshop I held and I tried to use more inclusive language, without taking the precaution of finding out more about the profile of the group that would be with me. The discomfort was immediate upon receiving the material. So that there would be no more embarrassment, I apologized and started over. It was the greatest practical lesson I received. Before any initiative, it is important to understand the predominant culture and values and understand the biases that affect that structure, and that system.

Executive coaching creates a safe space for open dialogue and constructive conversations about diversity and inclusion. Coaches can facilitate discussions that encourage empathy, understanding, and perspective-taking among team members. By fostering an environment of trust and respect, coaching enables individuals to share their experiences, perspectives, and concerns related to diversity and inclusion. These dialogues help build empathy, foster inclusivity, and strengthen relationships within the workplace. Personally, I've facilitated coaching sessions that encourage participants to share their personal stories and engage in active listening exercises.

En mi rol de consultor, cuando dicto una capacitación o conduzco un coaching a líderes, la personalización y adecuación a cada una de las personas del equipo es vital. La labor del líder siempre implica un registro de cada una de las personas en su singularidad, sus necesidades, deseos y aspiraciones. Cuando hablamos de inclusión de perfiles diversos en las organizaciones, no se advierte una necesidad de cambiar el enfoque, ya que todos tenemos fortalezas y áreas de oportunidad y dependerá de la habilidad del líder al asignar correctamente las tareas y desarrollar en puntos específicos a cada uno. El mundo es diverso y se valora el aporte heterogéneo de las distintas miradas en el equipo.

Promote a meritocracy culture in the organisation where rewards are based on abilities, effort and achievement. Providing equal opportunities , set up reward system on the basis of individual merits and abilities, providing support based on individual needs are ways to promote meritocracy

My first professional lesson about diversity and inclusion came from my first manager at Wipro. She remembered everyone's food preferences (veg/non-veg) and even their birthdays. To date, we receive wishes from her on our birthdays, and that's super inspiring. This experience taught me the importance of recognizing and honouring individual differences in the workplace. Promoting diversity and inclusion is not just about policies and procedures; it's about creating a culture where everyone feels valued and respected. As a leader, champion diversity and inclusion initiatives with the existing workforce by providing ongoing diversity training & promoting open communication, and implementing inclusive hiring practices.

1. DEIB should be driven right from the top. If your top executives have not yet bought in to the idea that diverse teams are more productive ( and also the right thing to do) bring them onboard and make them your champions. 2. DEIB results should be published, annual diversity results should be something your employees look forward to and the strategies should percolate so deep down that everyone knows why this is an important growth lever. 3. I was reminded today again on the importance of legends and stories in culture building. So find your diverse employees and get them to share their stories.. this will touch more people and drive change faster than anything else ever will

Unconscious Bias Training: We all have biases. Training helps identify and overcome them in recruitment, promotion, and daily interactions. Broaden Recruitment: Actively seek candidates from diverse backgrounds through targeted outreach and inclusive job descriptions. Employee Resource Groups: Support groups for shared identities (gender, race, etc.) foster belonging and provide a platform for voices to be heard. Inclusive Communication: Be mindful of language and ensure clear communication channels exist for everyone to feel comfortable sharing ideas. Celebrate Diversity: Recognize and celebrate cultural holidays and achievements of employees from all backgrounds.
