In today's world, the voices of those who speak are more noticed and appreciated than silence, which is often seen as a lack of knowledge, articulation, and confidence. This is a sad truth. Active listening needs to be cultivated as a personal habit and promoted as a culture and practice in professional spaces. Managers and seniors play a crucial role here. Simple steps go a long way: Forget the phone and go offline on Outlook during meetings/check-ins—they are major distractors and devalue the person's presence. When you listen, just listen 90% of the time. Avoid "yes, it happened to me too." Conduct check-ins to understand, without a rushed agenda or judgment. This builds connection, appreciation, and enables growth.

"You can’t pour from an empty cup," as the saying goes. Encouraging self-care amidst the hustle culture, where people often feel pressured to perform, keep busy, and work long hours, is crucial. Having worked through the most trying times of disaster response, where 24/7 was literally our work schedule, I remember how our manager insisted we step back, breathe, and connect on personal levels. This professional support made us feel cared for while we responded to community needs. This experience inspired me, as a team lead, to "pay it forward" by bringing such care to the teams and people I work with. Practicing and encouraging self-care enhances long-term productivity, making it a vital action point for all of us.
