A coach is a third party observer (detached from your business) that can help you hone in on your strengths, improvement areas and impact. A coach can help you build a development plan that helps you leverage your strengths to increase your impact and work your areas of improvement - the latter from a safe place (not with a performance eval looming). They can also support you in understanding what is the impact you have in your organization. Not what you have done, but the "so what" and the "why" of it - why what you did matters, and what results did it bring to the organization. Lastly, the coach helps you package your strengths and impact in the form of effective communication, so that decision makers know your work as much as you do.

We have tha goals, great, now there must be analysis of what prevents you from achieving it. This will be great input to the action plan how to overcome those obstacles. I like to use grades of proficiency when skills evaluation is undertaken: - Independent - excellent knowledge and applied many times, can coach/mentor others - Proficient - good knowledge and applied skills several times - Basic - there's some knowledge and could apply with/without assistance - Very basic - low level of knowledge, no confidence in applying without assistance This could work for individual, team and department skills evaluation. Important to mention, when you evaluate someone's skills, you should first ask this person how he/she evaluate them.

I agree with this and let me share a personal experience. In my early career days, I noticed that my counterparts with whom I did the same work were on a higher grade level. I brought this to the attention of my supervisor, who gathered evidence and coached me to document my accomplishments, quantify my impact on projects and identify relevant skills that I have developed. After that, she further coached me on confidently approaching HR.

Focus on your strengths, you will accelerate faster in life if you focus on your strengths than trying to spend 90% of your time fixing your weaknesses. The thing to note is - manage your weaknesses so it does not hinder your progress. Think about the role(s) that allow you to play to your strengths. From there, look at skill sets or knowledge you may need to take you to another level. If you're adept at something, and with the right tools, you will forge ahead.

Having a coach has helped me grow a lot in my career. It’s been a great way to hold me accountable and help me improve on my skills. Best part is coming out with a plan of action, breaking the plan of action into achievable tasks and allocating the time frame to get it done.

Trick to share…I have helped people break down the strategy into 4 slices. 1 - focus on your skill set and what you have to bring to the table. 2 - learn all you can about the position and the company. 3 - what does the future and competition look like in your view? 4 - focus on the actual position (associated tasks, projects, goals, daily activities, etc). Learn and master those 4 things can provide a huge boost in your confidence going in, and finally, see yourself in the position and believe in yourself!

But “networking” has gained a negative connotation, feeling slimy and icky and involving handing out business cards and taking as much as possible. In this case, you want to develop the skills to build a network and act on those skills, focusing on giving as much as possible. Networking is NOT transactional. If you treat it this way, your network will wither and die. I think what people struggle with the most that hinders promotion is self-doubt and feeling of unpreparedness. In my experience confidence is the single biggest blocker/ limiting belief for clients. Coaching is desired to be positive and move forward positively so celebrating your clients wins and overcoming of fears enables them to grow and build their confidence. Understanding what confidence means to them by asking questions such as “what does confidence mean to you?” “when have you been at your most confidence before?” “Imagine you are confident, how would you behave”

A coach is an amazing person to have, and to be a sounding board, for your struggles and to encourage you to keep pushing through. I have found that relying on another, to accomplish your goals, is not always the best route. Doing your job, by knowing your job, and knowing where you want to go with your job, are the key factors in your job performance , and future. Today many rely on others to get them to a certain status, I don't feel having someone coach you to a position is actually going to get you to that position. Self doubt holds too many back, at the same time, it removes the weaker candidates and the stronger move through, by knowing their job, and what is expected. When you do the work, you reap the reward, bottom line.

The best way to get promoted is to already be achieving the results required to do the job you would like to be promoted into. If this is already happening then you probably don’t need a coach for this ambition. If it isn’t, then a coach can help you to raise your game to the standard necessary to achieve & flourish in a promoted role.
