In my experience, apart from sw project management skills (planning, execution, control and closure which involves- stakeholders, risk, resource and quality management etc), transformation skills are key for sail through journey as project manager from one industry to other. Understand transformation skills which would help to address challenges in new industry - example high level understanding in high level regulatory requirements for safety critical industries such as Aerospace or healthcare or automobile, drive parallel analogy between them ease out. The reason is being project manager, he/she needs yo involve/meet in quality aswell certification requirement. Transformation skills are key when changing the industry.

For me it is all about applying oneself. Software project management teaches a person skills like - planning and tracking, risk identification and mitigation, on the feet thinking, stake holder management so on. All these skills may sound like software jargons but if deciphered individually it is more of applying common sense for a particular situation and solving for situation at hand. Given this backdrop, one needs to focus on picking the nuances of the particular domain - first unlearn the way of doing things in s/w project management and then apply oneself to the new situations at hand. Am sure if one applies his learnability he or she will just need to hand held for couple of assignments to begin with and then the flight can soar

In my view- learning is continuous process, there is no end. Beyond your USP, impact you created in previous organisation, your ability learn new skills can be conveyed through your learnings/ certification or industry connect etc which can help your to sail through, when you want to move to different industries. It shows your adaptability or willingness to learn new areas

First, try yourself in the industries for which you created software. And, unfortunately, you will likely crash in no-virtual industries if not have education and hands-on experience working with physical products.
