Searching new techniques applied in industry is challenging but try to search and update all the time. I will suggest to target one domain for e.g. healthcare. Focus on community needs apply the application using Meta Analysis where synthesis of problems gives the solutions.

Networking is key. For academia (biomedical research), I strongly recommend researching laboratories or individuals that have a lot of experience with bioinformatics analyses. It can be helpful to assess the literature, as well as, social media platforms where scientists communicate to show their work or help each other out. This is an excellent way to observe the academic environment, and find people who can help point you in the right direction, and build your network.
