It is certainly a real thing, people learn new systems and/or technology best by showing it first and not throw them in 'the deep' straightaway. I often show/explain a new system before asking them to work with it. Ideally there is a training modus so that any mistakes are not effecting the real data. Next to this I make sure to have resources available to participants can use to revisit the content and/or step-by-step action in their own time and at their own pace.

Emotional connection >> why does this matter to me >> how can this make my life easier is very important. If we cannot explain the benefits we should revisit the content of the training (and it does raise the question whether it is a good system or technology upgrade to start with). Once the added value is established over the status quo (do nothing) scenario we can start exploring the system.

From my experience it is key to make sur participants understand how certain elements relate to the bigger picture or system process. Often there are so many features that people lose the oversight. By having 'connection points' in the training where we bring everything back to the bigger picture is often appreciated.
