In sustainable design, it's common to find yourself overwhelmed by extensive research and a multitude of materials. When you reach this point, take a moment to reflect on how your ancestors, such as your mother or grandmother, approached similar challenges. Surprisingly, despite the lack of advanced technology, our forebears often had a deeper understanding of how to live sustainably. Their traditional methods and simpler ways can provide valuable insights and inspire more effective, eco-friendly solutions in our modern projects!

When it comes to overcoming challenges in sustainable design, leveraging eco-friendly materials is paramount. By prioritizing materials with low environmental impact and high durability, you can enhance the sustainability of your projects. Consider utilizing recycled materials, renewable resources, and non-toxic alternatives to traditional building materials. Additionally, explore innovative materials such as bamboo, cork, and reclaimed wood, which offer both environmental benefits and aesthetic appeal.

At the core of sustainable design is ensuring the 'sustainable solution' fits the criteria of long-term efficiency with zero to positive environmental impact. Fundamentally though, besides prioritizing positive environmental impact, evidence supports that the overall health and wellbeing of the space users is equally critical. Thus, ensuring a careful selection of eco-materials that enhance the healthy qualities of a space is key, as well as capitalizing on passive design strategies such as sufficient natural daylighting and comfortable levels of temperature, air quality and ventilation. Supported research also confirms that the presence of natural biophilia elements significantly enhances the quality of space utility by the end users.

When I first started my NYC design firm over 25 years ago, I was secretly horrified by the waste that was going on around me. I was seeing the habit of throwing away perfectly good items simply because it had not fit their 'ideal' vision. It was at one such moment, when a client proposed to throw away an entire new kitchen because the shade of white was 'off' that I proposed the solution to change the wall colour and backsplash to reflect in the cabinets to 'change' the tone. It worked- thankfully! So I believe that the first, and most significant challenge is to raise awareness of the NEED to not live in a throw-away society and to find clever and creative solutions to working with what we already have. Review, reuse, and repurpose!

Most of us start with the wrong question: how can I be more efficient? That is not the pathway to integrating sustainability. In addition, third party rating systems are incomplete, except for Lbc. Instead, work on leadership and culture change. Start so to go fast. Play the long game. Make sustainability a verb and work continuously towards small but meaningful wins. Don’t make it a diet, make it a delightful part of the process. Stop ‘othering’ sustainability.

Sustainability often faces misconceptions regarding cost implications. Existing constructions can be retrofitted sustainably and cost effectively to enhance energy efficiency. In tropical upland climates with glazed buildings, retrofitting for environmental suitability involves dynamic simulation to predict post-retrofit energy performance upgrades. This process analyzes parameters such as window to wall ratio, sun shading, glazing, and wall thickness, employing scientific methods like the Morris Method for global sensitivity analysis. Integrating energy efficiency into design is essential for promoting sustainability. By prioritizing passive design strategies that optimize natural light and ventilation, the reliance on artificial heating, cooling, and lighting can be minimized. But we need to understand that capital expenditure cost will increase in order to make the design efficient and sustainable. Operations cost will decrease and energy saving will lead to sustainable and greener planet

One of the key challenges in sustainable design is ensuring energy efficiency. Drawing from my experience in website sustainability, I've learned that optimizing energy usage is crucial. By implementing efficient coding practices, optimizing images and multimedia content, and using tools like carbon calculator, digital lifecycle assessment and website audits, we can significantly reduce the energy footprint of digital assets. This approach not only helps in minimizing environmental impact but also contributes to cost savings and enhances user experience.

Addressing challenges in energy efficiency requires a systems thinking approach that goes beyond technical solutions. Consider the interconnectedness of energy systems with social, economic, and environmental factors. Prioritize passive design strategies and renewable energy sources that harness natural resources while minimizing environmental impact. Rain water harvesting is a great method of conserving water and managing it re-use. Sufficient drain works are important to help maximize on this process . If managed well, one may have sufficient water to manage their landscaping works for at least half a year.

I created Modular Homes made of sustainable materials , that can be reused or fully be recycled. That reduces waste significantly . Also in toy collection for stuffed toys,we used recycled fabrics from ocean plastic, that look great and are very soft, it reduces and uses waste. I created the first vegan bath faucets collection in the world. In the production process we used metals , that can be recycled nearly endless and every little piece of material during production process is collected and reused. So there is less waste.

By meticulously planning for the end-of-life phase of design elements, designers can play a pivotal role in reducing the environmental footprint of their projects.

The vast majority of the waste we generate is predetermined by the design choices made at the very beginning of a product's life cycle. What if we could change that? Here at Cercle X, we embraced this philosophy with our Metabins – smartbins that gamify waste sorting. We focused on: - Lifespan and Recyclability: Durable and materials that are easily recyclable like steel or HDPE ensure long-lasting use. - Disassembly Made Easy: We designed it as a plug&play bin, where components can be easily separated at the end of their lifespan. (reusable screws instead of glued joints), allowing parts to be recycled or repurposed. By designing with the "end-of-life" in mind, we can minimize waste at its source.

Even if you are not going to apply for LEED or other sustainability certifications, their guidelines and checklists are a wealth of information on sustainability and well worth reading. Many of the standards and guidelines of these certifications can be readily incorporated into your design and specifications without adding that much complexity or cost to the project. We have done 8 LEED certified projects as all levels of certification including two LEED Platinum Projects and have incorporated many of the requirements and recommendation of LEED into our base specifications on all our projects, such as no VOC and low VOC paints, stains, sealers and adhesives, as well as no added formaldehyde wood products throughout our projects.

LEED & BREEAM certificates are intended to raise awareness of the benefits of a sustainable approach by providing a framework to successfully implement sustainable solutions in a cost-effective way and ensuring recognition of their achievements by the market. It aims to reduce the negative impacts of construction and development on the environment. It is good to have such guidance. But it would be easier if building regulations were uniform. In Germany, there are 16 different building laws and 20,000 building regulations. With so much bureaucracy, it is difficult for many people to concentrate on Breeam or Leed certificates. It is time to cut back on the old bureaucracy and focus on essential and ecological building standards of the future.

Understanding and adhering to LEED and BREEAM standards is crucial for sustainable building, with local councils offering guidance to meet these benchmarks and enhance building sustainability.

Green compliance is adhering/ obeying all the environmental laws. There are laws for residential, commercial and industrial uses. These involve bringing in green, sustainable practices into regular practice. Adhering to it may sound daunting, but if done correctly it can help achieve sustainability in the long run. For eg, Rainwater harvesting practice as a law for all uses can decrease the runoff of water. Similarly, bringing in green practices into industries can reduce the over usage of natural resources and lessen the output of toxic wastes.

Compliance with green building standards like LEED and BREEAM is vital in contemporary design. LEED covers energy efficiency, water conservation, materials, and indoor environmental quality, while BREEAM evaluates sustainability across energy, water, materials, and ecology, emphasizing lifecycle impacts. Achieving regulatory compliance involves understanding local regulations and collaborating with green building councils or sustainability organizations. These partnerships foster compliance and innovation in sustainable design. Complexities and varying regulations persist, standards now focus on performance-based metrics, integrating emerging technologies and collaborations among stakeholders is essentially crucial going forward!

Foster collaboration and integration among different disciplines involved in the design process, such as architects, engineers, and environmental consultants. By working together from the early stages of a project, sustainable design solutions can be integrated seamlessly.

The real impact of the work and architecture is in people, in how we are able to simplify the life of the community, not only owners of the design and the ego that this brings, we must and we have to represent the voice and the needs of the people, that is where the real change is achieved, and our weapons are architecture in all its nuances.

Like all design, the best results come from working backwards from an experience you want to create for your recipient. Whether designing a building, or infrastructure, attraction or shop, the community in which it resides is critical - will it create opportunities for the area, will it provide jobs, engage local suppliers, use locally sourced materials, will it improve biodiversity, will it improve lifestyles? Taking a community-first, local-first approach, and working with what is already available - people, materials, suppliers, gets you a lot of sustainability for free by minimising transport during production and encouraging residents to stay local afterwards by improving the local quality of life.

??Designs should generally have ethics in relation to nature, animals and people. My designs and products are vegan and free from animal suffering; I do not want animals to be killed, abused or exploited for my creations. In addition, production should take place under humane working conditions. Products should be sustainable and environmentally friendly. All three aspects are important to me as ethics in my products.

To overcome key challenges in sustainable design, a holistic approach is essential. By considering all aspects, Eco Materials, Energy Efficiency, Water Wisdom, Waste Reduction, Green Compliance, and Community Impact, one can achieve a balanced and globally responsive solution. However, the most challenging aspect lies in defining the balance between these elements to avoid fixation on one specific topic. Sustainable design must prioritize a sustainable approach overall, ensuring it doesn't become overly focused on any single aspect.

The difference between a successful material selection and a wasteful one is the way it fits the design and its intent. Materials and designs are not interchangeable: applying recycled plastics to a wasteful design makes the entire effort wasteful. It's about integrating them thoughtfully into the design to achieve the desired outcome.

I feel maintaining perspective of the human experience that the designed space is likely to generate is a key consideration of sustainable design. Whether the functional use type of the design be a school or healthcare or office or retail or others, it is important to consider the health and wellness of occupants. Design considerations to holistically include balancing parameters of air quality levels, noise levels, lighting levels, temperature levels, humidity levels, glare control measures, daylight exposure, the ease to use the space with its energy controls, facilities maintenance aspects and more.
