I think the transition is more accessible for engineers and technical folks with a solid skill set and expertise within their domain. Arguably, it is easier to work on an expert's leadership skills versus getting a generalist to understand basic controls or engineering. There are always barriers when transitioning into a new subculture, and the first thing is language. The dialect of the subculture, especially the executive group, is specific to each organization, and cultural fit is examined through linguistics. The second thing for me is time; the average turnover of leadership is two to four years, so what can be accomplished in that time frame, including some home runs and long-term goals that will still be ongoing when you leave?
