When developing a layout you must always start with an accurate current state of the machines. Field checking the machines on the shop floor is a requirement. This step cannot be skipped since a poor current state can result in machines that will not fit on the shop floor When the current state is completed then workshops can take place to design an optimal layout with improved flow and efficiency. Layout development must include all stakeholders in the operation, including supervisors, operators, safety, quality, maintenance, operations, and management. Having the operators that run the machines help in the redesign allows them to have ownership and pride in the new layout which will help in operational buy-in and long term sustainment.
