I once worked with a global team in different timezones - we had one colleague in New Zealand, a few in the USA, one in Manila, quite a few in Asia, a few of us in the UK and our boss was based in Singapore. What made this situation more challenging was that these teams were very busy. So we agreed on a few key principles and took it in turns to attend out-of-hours sessions, so sometimes the UK team would have to stay on a bit later or sometimes the USA team would have to start quite early. At least once a month the entire team meets. More regular sessions for regional teams and team leads from other regions would join those sessions to give updates from their perspective. Very often, we encounter change that isn't popular and in such cases, there is a level of resistance. Getting people together in a room, to be honest and truthful may shed some light - but I have found that using tools where people can honestly share their insights or experiences can help understand (even if we don't agree) why there is resistance.

I regularly monitored how our team used the chosen communication tools and protocols. I solicited feedback to understand what was working and what wasn't. I was prepared to adjust our communication strategies as the team evolved. I remained open to experimenting with new tools and approaches as the team grew and changed.
