In-Person suggestions a. I would focus on 3 themed areas of in-person networking .. 1. Within your industry space (or your target vertical for sales people) 2. Within your function (cross industry) 3. Within your affinity (colleges, heritage etc) You can find loads of outlets for those via platforms like meetup.com or newsletters like garysguide for tech in NYC. b. Dont be shy. Most people are uncomfortable with going into rooms of strangers so you are not alone. Just stick out your hand and say something like "I'm XXXX. What brings you to this event?" c. Balance. It is not all about you directly asking for help getting a job. Have a two way conversation. See if you can help that person with their needs. d. Follow up!

Join Groups - Search for groups (Professional / Alumni etc), start contributing, share your knowledge, and expertise! 5. Think about why someone should connect with you - E.g. possible working opportunities, sharing valuable insights and interesting content. 4. Attend social gatherings/events/meet-ups – Embrace the opportunity to meet a wider group of people, meeting in person will always help build stronger relationships. 5) Persevere!

Be curious! Simply ask people if you can hear their stories and the biggest keys to their success. Don't have an agenda. Just an open mind and open ears. Personally whenever I was in the market for a job, I would narrow down the list of companies I would like to target and then apply for jobs. Once I have applied for positions, I would reach out to hiring managers, department heads, and TA specialist with a short but precise email. It had helped me landing my dream jobs. So unless it is a non-profit (charity) that is genuinely making an impact on the greater good DO NOT waste your time volunteering for free in some large organisation in hopes that it might lead to a job someday. This is 2024 you can make money doing anything so don't waste your time doing it for free.

I have sat through many introductions in business networking events but it was not until I organised an impromptu carol singing for staff and members of the London Chamber of Commerce that I felt connected to the organisation and they to me. Who wants to work with an expressionless "robot" when one can work with a person with initiative and love of life?

Also don't be afraid to ask. I waited for 6 years to have an invitation to a sports club I now belong to. I met the club president in a social setting and within 45 minutes I had an invitation to the club. I was honest , witty and took advantage of the situation. Opportunities are everywhere you just have to be prepared to seize them.
