Many people believe that if they are talking then they are communicating effectively. This is not true. Just because someone is saying something it does not mean that the other person is hearing it in the way that they intended. Meetings with managers e.g. 1:1s can be made far more effective by removing status and news updates. Create a shared doc where both of you update the doc prior to the 1:1 with project updates, opportunity updates and any broader news. This frees up the whole of the 1:1 to focus on challenges, career development and specific support that is needed. There is now much more time to avoid communications issues.
