Too often teams skip the phase of truly understanding what is the problem to be addressed, and rush straight to the problem-solving phase. 1. Find the root causes for visible problems using cause-and-effect analysis (like Ishikawa diagram or 5 why’s) 2. Based on this analysis, facilitate discussion on who should be involved in finding the solutions effectively. Using analysis on control, deduce what issues the team itself can affect, and where they need someone else’s help. 3. After this you can be more assured that the team is addressing the right target.

You may not use everything you have available on paper, but when you offer strong punchy verbal feedback people remember that and it makes them feel like they can do it too.
