Being able to tell a story that is logical, easy to follow and understand is a skill and the easiest way to navigate that would be through the use of Situation/Task/Action/Result. My favourite part to target is Action as by each action taken one can highlight targeted skills. I believe that the same story can target many areas of competence - the same story can showcase collaboration/teamwork, or be more focused on problem-solving / communication... So, prepare 5 narratives you are proud of and by targeting, you can use them for almost any interview behavioural question or performance evaluations.

Further to this I am partial to the CAR approach, where C stands for challenge (frame this almost like a call to action wake up call use a short story style to speak to the challenge), A stands for action (speak on more of a bullet point style laying out exactly the steps you took to overcome the challenge). Finally R stands for result, finish off with a one line good news sentence. If you want to up your game even more add a question at the end "have you experienced any challenges in this area?" Listen and respond accordingly.

Even if the question is: Tell me about the time you failed or did not complete or reach a target... where the result was negative, do not end your answer there. Provide, learning moments, "if I were to do it again, I would change...", what steps have you taken since then to ensure this does not happen again, how did this negative result help shape all the future positive outcomes...

If you have a bad report or you are up against a negative stereotype you could adopt a more unconventional approach. Preemptive Reference: Good referees are great, if you have one email or call them asking you to give some feedback on your performance (ask nicely for feedback that will counter the negative review). Then under the Summary (CV) or Objective (Resume) headline add a headline "What others say" then give paste a short quote from your referees email. It's a bit out of the box but really all you are doing is changing the order of the process (bringing referees to the front). In New Zealand we use CVs almost exclusively so this fits quite naturally, a resume on the other hand would require a bit more finesse.
