It is also extremely beneficial to do the research to see salaries of others in your job description and work location to see where you are lining up and this can be used in your case for a raise.

One of my favorite approaches is to ask how to achieve whatever the goal is before asking for them to hand it over to you. Before asking for the raise, talk to your superior about what the roadmap looks like to get to where you want to get. This will show you what needs to happen + show them you are ambitious and ready to take on challenges. It's more open ended and doesn't present them with a yes/no which in which they have to answer one way.

Before stepping into that meeting, equip yourself with a concise and compelling document summarizing your contributions, quantifying your achievements whenever possible.
