In my experience, you must always be transparent. No interviewer expects you to know everything. The worst thing you can do is try to fluff through it. Be honest tell the truth that you don’t know the answer at that time. Offer to research the question and provide an answer within a few hours of the interview. This will show the interviewer that you are honest and more importantly willing to learn and grow your knowledge.

When you don't know the answer to a particular question, I find that giving examples relative to the the question also helps. As a technician, you will run into all sorts of problems. Most of them will be common to other techs, but some will be very unique to you. Whenever I'm asked a question on how to solve "XYZ", and I don't have experience with it, I'll tell the interviewer how I solved "ABC". That way they'll know that I have the ability to work through an issue and problem solve. Being a technician doesn't mean that you have all of the right answers, but it does mean that you understand the problem and how to get to a satisfactory solution.

If there is one thing that is certain when looking to advance your career, it's the ongoing process of learning and obtaining more knowledge. In this aspect, if confronted with a situation you ultimately are not sure of a resolution, it's important to reflect your wanting to solve the unsolvable and show your willingness and desire to learn as you grow within that field to handle these situations that were once beyond us.

I periodically participate with my team conducting interviews. Something that I like to do is ask about something that I have a good feeling the candidate will not know. The purpose is simple. Test to see if they will make something up in desperation or will they be honest and reply with an I don't know the answer to that but I could research by doing this. This is a very difficult field and there is no way to know everything. It's ok to not know so sometimes "I don't know" is the right answer.
