Here's how you can navigate failure in a performance review.

If you are getting a poor performance review, I would ask first was it a surprise? if so, it's a clear indication of a lack of communications and awareness of your goals/objectives. That isn't necessarily all your fault, and yet I see this as something you had a hand in. The last thing you should do now is to move to Victim Ville (it's not a great place to live). Step back and without being overly judgmental of yourself, begin the process understanding what you did or didn't do well. Communications with your supervisor are critical, so listen and understand their perspectives. Most importantly check your ego and ask for help. It will go along way to rebuilding your reputation.

Your supervisor should become your biggest ally in moving forward with your plan. Be sure to engage with them and express how their help will ensure your mutual success. Ask them to review your plan and make recommendations on what could be improved. You should be the one to schedule the check-ins. This will demonstrate to your supervisor your sincerity. Finally be sure you live up to the commitments you make. When you will miss one, reach out before and let them know. You will show your supervisor your integrity.

Learning/growing from our failures is one of the guiding principles of growth mindset. it is natural to fail. However, it does not need to define who we are. By approaching failure with a growth mindset, taking ownership of your mistakes, seeking feedback and guidance, setting realistic goals, and being patient with yourself, you can navigate failure in a performance review and emerge stronger and more resilient on the other side.

Focus on maintaining a positive attitude: A negative performance review can be discouraging, but it's important to maintain a positive attitude. Focus on the areas for improvement and the opportunity for growth. Let your manager know you're committed to turning things around. A positive outlook will be more productive than dwelling on the setbacks. Seek additional support: Don't be afraid to seek additional support from your manager, colleagues, or HR. They may be able to offer guidance, resources, or mentorship to help you achieve your goals. Taking advantage of these resources demonstrates your proactive approach and commitment to improvement.
