There is so much professional retirees can contribute to social programs, which can be just as, if not more fulfilling than work. I contribute to a number of civil society organizations on issues that I am passionate about including climate change, transparency, corruption, international politics, electoral reform and good governance. My advice would be think about what you are passionate about, and look for opportunities to contribute. Your post retirement life can be even more rewarding and fulfilling than you imagine.

I see this as a process rather than a project, its a continuum. I started my transition a few years ago after working as volunteer at Generation Brasil (mentoring young low income adults on the search for new jobs), Abrata (helping people with affective disorders) and Peace and Happiness Foundation (as a teacher in Thailand).

We had a similar experience when a vendor's social participation dropped owing to resilience difficulties. We quickly established an open discussion with the vendor, emphasizing the significance of agility. Over time, I've realized that being proactive is critical. Regular performance assessments and clear expectations help to mitigate potential concerns with vendor resiliency. Implementing backup plans and cultivating a culture of flexibility among the team has proven useful. Keeping alternative vendors on standby and fostering inventive solutions might mitigate the impact of vendor resilience on social engagement.

One question to consider is where you want to spend your time. If your job is fulfilling and exciting, you may consider continuing, as the personal goals may not be necessary right now. However, if you have strong personal goals that continue to be your focus and you can't wait to get started, then look hard at that. Especially if your personal goals are time bound. I've seen too many people wait too long to retire and opportunities pass them by.

Remember that mentoring people doesn't stop when you leave. Yes, when you're in your job, you're able to make more of an impact because you know the day to day and you're able to drive. However, eventually you have to let go of the reigns and bring people up, and you can stay connected and still mentor and guide. It might give them the opportunity to grow without you there but still a lifeline. If you are staying on for your legacy, give yourself a timeline and stick to it. Otherwise new work will always come along that will make you stay on longer!

There's such a stigma surrounding leaving a position of leadership before you are literally incapable of fulfilling that role effectively. Many of us were fed this narrative that success is only recognized by the next level you achieve and how long you're able to sustain it. That's not a standard we should be setting, especially as a legacy. There's so much power in being able to gracefully bow out of a position that no longer fulfills you and moving onto something else that does. For most of us, the higher we climb up the ladder, the further we get from doing the things we love and were great at. Find your way back to that if you need it, while setting those boundaries to allow those that fill your role, to do so out of your shadow.

At end of the day, and even more importantly, this reflection may open new thrilling avenues even before you have to make a decision on the actual retirement. Until the inevitable retire from life, hoppefully with a smile.

At this stage, I would give priority to what gives me joy. In the absence of needs which require me to work, I would focus on self actualization and do work which I enjoy. That does not mean zero stress, problem free, nor fully appreciated work. In fact it would be the continuing challenge of dealing with trouble and unpredictability that would attract me to doing program management work. I now know enough not to underestimate, overestimate, nor be easily overcomed. It would be fun :)
