Here's how you can navigate conflicts between team members as a product manager.

Conflicts are like weeds in a garden – ignoring them won't make them go away. Instead, they'll likely grow bigger and uglier. So, when a conflict sprouts up, don't turn a blind eye. Face it head-on, but with a calm and neutral attitude. Hear everyone out, without pointing fingers or playing favorites. This shows respect for all involved and a genuine desire to find a solution. After all, a team is only as strong as its members feel heard and valued.

Conflict is healthy as it pushes the team to better solutions. Encouraging people to challenge each other is important. Everyone needs psychological safety so that they feel comfortable expressing their views without retribution. Keeping it non-personal and focused on driving the best outcomes for customers keeps everyone in the right headspace.

Conflicts are bound to happen for many reasons, I have seen both healthy & unhealthy conflicts. Healthy conflicts are the ones where your team members are passionate about your product and have different perspectives to build, market, & deliver which increases the sales of the product. We need to listen to both perspectives, consider the best perspective, & explain why this is best by backing up with case studies, experiences, & data-backed proofs. These conflicts are the biggest wins for your organization & customers. Unhealthy conflicts are the ones that come from human egos / personal reasons, these are the ones you need to communicate & resolve or take to the respective authority as these conflicts should not affect the team harmony.

The aim is to address the issue without any partiality. As a leader, active listening to the concern is the first step, followed by handling the issue in a diplomatic way without any bias. This gives confidence to team that is the issue is addressed in without bias.

Friction is required for movement however, it should never rise to the level of disharmony amongst the team. Monitor the team closely but never micromanage and when conflicts do arise address them promptly. Listen to the parties and facilitate conversations focusing on the issue at hand not the pugilists. Redirect passions to outcomes and solutions. Celebrate successes as they come and gently remind the team it took all participants and perspectives to achieve them.

Open dialogue is invaluable for resolving conflicts, yet there are instances where direct discussions may not be feasible. In such cases, a product manager should engage with each party individually, understanding their viewpoints thoroughly. Then utilize this insight to deliver a balanced, constructive feedback to both. It’s crucial for a product manager to establish a foundation of inherent trust with all stakeholders beforehand, ensuring that the resolution process is collaborative and respected by everyone involved.

What my Corporate experience has taught me so far is that Open & Sincere Dialog can resolve most of the conflicts at workplace. It's really important to understand each other's feeling and recognize the pain points through open dialog and offer the right kind of responses to each other at every issue where the other person feels disadvantaged or disrespected or anything like that. It's also important to understand the boundaries between each other's roles, to avoid any future conflicts. Open dialog with a positive mindset, right choice of words and body language would get you out of most of the conflicting situations at work place.

We can borrow the "blameless postmortem" culture from the aviation industry. One of the reasons airplanes are so safe is because, after every aviation incident, the main goal is to understand how to prevent another such incident, not to find out who is guilty. This way all the participants know that they should not fear losing their careers and they have no reason to withhold critical information. I think we should foster the same culture in every organization.

Remember, we're all in this together. Finding common ground is like discovering a hidden treasure map. It helps us navigate through conflicts. Encourage your team to pinpoint shared goals or interests tied to the project. This commonality can be a solid base for building trust and understanding. When everyone knows they're rowing in the same direction, they're more likely to work together, compromise, and create something truly awesome.

This requires a key skill, the skill of listening. Once you highlight the end game and the benefits-listen and guide your way to solutions.

While working as a team, every conflict has mutual initiation so it's better to find a common ground by acknowledging our part and taking steps to resolve it in mutual fashion

For example, reminding team members of the project’s ultimate objective can help redirect energy towards collaborative problem-solving. I remember a project where conflicting ideas were harmonized by emphasizing our shared goal of delivering a high-quality product.

Clarify each team member's role to prevent overlaps and misunderstandings while working towards a common goal and mention RACI (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed) for each task to avoid conflict.

A conflict can make two people best friends or worst enemies after the conflict has been resolved for the first time. How? It all revolves around how well all the persons involved in the conflict behave and act after they agree to resolve it and move forward positively. This would show who is actually out of the conflict mentality and who is still seeking a chance to settle previous scores. Both kind of attitudes would determine the future course for the workplace. Implementing the solutions agreed upon during the conflict resolution and adhering to the mutually agreed decorum is super important to not let more and worse conflicts pop up in future.

If the team members are to continue to work together, there needs to be clear motivation (buy-in) to the implemented solutions, not just a superficial agreement. An extremely important aspect of implementation is careful implementation and *continued* subtle selling of the solutions make sure that each party sees much greater value in sticking to the solution than to ignoring this change they must accommodate that resulted from a negative experience or party in the first place.

Once issues are identified and solutions discussed, it's time to implement them. Ensure the agreed-upon actions are clear, and each team member understands their role in the resolution process. This might involve redistributing tasks, setting new communication guidelines, or providing additional resources. Implementation is critical; it demonstrates that you're not just discussing change but actively making it happen. This commitment turns plans into tangible improvements. ???

Once a resolution is identified, it’s essential to implement it effectively. We can do the following: 1. Create an Action Plan - Outline specific steps to address the conflict and assign responsibilities. 2. Set Deadlines - Establish clear timelines for implementing solutions. 3. Ensure Commitment - Gain commitment from all parties to follow through with the agreed-upon actions.

After figuring out what's wrong and talking about ways to fix it, it's time to put those solutions into action. Make sure everyone knows what they need to do to help solve the problem. This might mean changing who does what, setting new rules for how we talk to each other, or getting more help if we need it. Taking action is super important. It shows we're not just talking about making things better, but actually doing something about it.

The below practices help monitor progress in a structured way and ensure the conflicts are completely resolved and don't reoccur. 1. Regular Follow-Up Meetings - Schedule periodic check-ins to assess progress. 2. Adjust Plans if Necessary - Be prepared to make adjustments if the initial solutions are not effective. 3. After implementing solutions, monitor progress to ensure the conflict doesn't re-emerge. Keep an eye on team dynamics and check in regularly with those involved. Once an issue is resolved, it needs to be maintained to ensure this does not reoccur. In my experience, diving deeper into problems can help us understand the root causes and key impediments that lead to conflicts. Shifting from "perception" to "perspective" is crucial, emphasizing the power of understanding others' viewpoints for personal growth and success. Clarity is needed not only from our perspectives but also from those of other team members or stakeholders. We can create more holistic and cohesive solutions by seeing issues together as one team rather than individual viewpoints.

In my experience I write down and analyze the issue more deeply. This allows me to gain a deeper understanding of the root causes and the perspectives of each person. By doing this, I can start to identify patterns and potential solutions more effectively. I consider the situation from each individual's perspective and then analyze what actions I can take as a leader to assist.

After resolving the conflict, take time to reflect on the process. This can help prevent future issues. Assess what worked well and what could be improved. Solicit feedback from the team on how the conflict was handled. Create a record of the conflict resolution process and outcomes for future reference.

The goal should not be to remove all misalignment among cross-functional product development teams. Disagreement brings out new ideas. The goal should be to set clear guidelines around how people act when they disagree with others. Here are a few ideas: 1. Promote and model objective truth-finding. 2. Focus on listening to feedback not defending individual positions. Dig deeper to understand the reasons behind misalignment and iterate on ideas. This doesn’t mean all feedback gets incorporated but the intent behind the feedback should be addressed. 3. Debate ideas openly but then decide. Once a decision is made, all teams need to get behind it.

Many conflicts come from the roles (and therefore responsibilities - real and imagined) that we each have. For example, understanding that a sales person is incentivized to please customers, regardless of the realities of the roadmap, means that you can be curious together about *how* to help the customer (a shared priority) rather than focusing on just saying no to an expensive surprise expectation. Then you can creatively solve the problem as allies with shared humanity and common goals.

An environment that will foster openness and doesn't refrain two people from openly talking about their concerns with each other. On overall knowledge sharing session to resolve and take criticism in positive sense.

As a product manager, first of all i figure out why, what, when, where, how and who created the problem. And after figuring out the cause of the problem I can take appropriate action so that it would never happen in future.
