Definitely keep an eye on your current task list I find politely mentioning that you can do the task, however other tasks will be relegated or negotiating a time with your boss helps to understand the urgency of the request. Don't be afraid to say no if it infringes on your boundaries.

I've found sending an email at the end of the week with top 3 tasks completed, proudest moments, tasks for next week and any blockers helps show your manager where you're at and helps them to see if you have any spare cycles.
