The most common question I get from designers who are just starting out is: “How do I build my portfolio?” Especially when they have not had any work experience or client projects. My tip for this has always been - start designing now. Don’t wait till your first “real project”. Identify a problem in your community that you can solve and design around that. Practice your UI & visual skills with fictional projects. Redesign an interface for someone in your network. Slowly but surely your portfolio will continue to grow, change, and improve over the years, even well into your career.

One thing which I have found helpful is the presentation of contents in a resume. During the screening process of candidates, the recruiter will immediately reject a poorly presented resume. So, how the contents are written also matters. Especially, if you're a fresher and you don't have enough information to input in your resume, you can write about any projects or thesis which you have worked on during your college and what are the skills you learnt from it.

Interviews can be nerve-wracking, but they're also your chance to shine. Prepare by practicing common interview questions related to UED, such as discussing your design process or how you handle feedback. Be ready to talk about your portfolio in detail, including the challenges you faced and how you overcame them. Taking mock interviews and practicing the interview will help to reduce the pressure during an actual interview. When you are confident that you can clear the interview through solid preparation, it will boost your overall confidence and aid in answering with clarity. It is very crucial for clearing any interviews. Especially for UED interviews, you might have to practically demonstrate certain designs as per the requirements. Based on the JD, we can have a basic background about the job and it's domain for preparing UED in a particular area. Modifying the portfolio by highlighting any domain specific projects will boost your chance of clearing that particular interview.

Networking is key in the UED industry. Attend industry meetups, workshops, and conferences to connect with professionals. Don't be shy about reaching out to UED practitioners on social media or through professional networking sites. Express your interest in the field and ask for advice on breaking into it.
